Girling rear outer pad holes

I'm overhauling a 1970 V8 and have a question. The old rear outer pads have holes in the metal backing to accept the pad securing/locating bolts. My Nos replacements (made by Armstrong and with wear sensors) don't have the hole. However there appears to be a slight depression in the metal backing where the hole should be. Am I meant to drill/poke/prod this depression and open it up to accept the securing/locating bolts, or are they the wrong pads? I'm a little weary of prodding too much due to potential asbestos content.

The pad backing should have the holes in them already, you shouldn't need to drill them for yourself. The pads were only fitted to the P6 and Zephyr/Zodiac Mk4, and they both need the holes. Sounds like faulty manufacture. There won't be (or shouldn't be) Asbsestos in the pads unles they're very old stock, and even if there was if you take care you shouldn't come to any harm.

Thanks very much once again Harveyp6 for another very helpful response. I still owe you a pint or two after my previous gearbox problems! I've just checked another pair of nos pads that I've got, mintex ones. These have the holes so I could use these but they're destined for another project really. Will have a poke/prod/careful drill and see where I get. Thanks again.

If the faulty pads are remanufactured items then maybe old backing plates have had new friction material bonded on to the wrong side.... :?

I have seen that before on rear pads where old backing plates have been used with new material bonded to them. The locating holes for the drag pins had been partly filled with friction material.

It is just a matter of clearing the holes as Harvey indicated.

Yup, I've had this issue too. I bought a couple of sets of Remsa pads in which the holes had been filled by pad material. I used an old pad that was worn down to the metal as a template and drilled out the holes again. They work fine, just a sloppy manufacturing process.

That's good gents many thanks. I've drilled the friction material away carefully and will be fitting them today. Fingers crossed.
