Gearbox problems

Hi Everyone,

Hope you can help, my new everyday driver (1971 P6 V8) has a bit of an issue with the gearbox. The previous owner told me that there had been a problem with the gearbox when he bought the car and as such he'd bought another. It was from a Stag, and with Clive Annable's help the internals of the Stag box were fitted into the Rover box, everything cleaned and checked and the car fixed.

Now, it runs fine and engages gears OK, it seems a bit hesitant to engage 3rd but if you lift of the throttle a bit it goes in. This bit I'm not bothered about. What worries me is the sensitivity of the throttle. The car simply cannot decide what gear to be in, it's constantly changing down and kicking down at the wrong time, under part throttle and mid corner etc. When it does it I can't decide if it's slipping or not...but it's definitely not right.

Could all this just be an incorrectly adjusted kickdown cable or is something more sinister happening in the gearbox?

Thanks in advance,

Very likely to be that the cable is adjusted so that it is too short . Other signs of this are bumpy changes, particularly as you come to a halt . I should try slackening it off a bit to see whether it makes any difference . To test for slip, hold the car against the brakes in L or R , and apply full throttle for no more than 10 seconds . You should not get much more than 1800 rpm shown

OK, stall test worked fine engine speed stayed at 1800rpm absolutely spot on. I then disconnected the kickdown cable and took the car for a run around the block. It ran a lot smoother but obviously no kickdown. I've adjusted (slackened) the cable as far out as it will go, but the car still kicks down a bit more than I'd like. It's 100% better than it was though and I can live with it for now.

Several other problems highlighted themselves though so I'll crack on with those first.
