Gearbox oil outburst

Does anyone have any idea why this might have happened.

Took the V8 to work yesterday, got about half a mile down the road and I saw loads of smoke coming out the back. Pulled over and lifted the bonnet fearing the worst.
(my tappets have been noisy for some time now, so im thinking ive done some serious damamge)
Anyway, the gearbox dipstick thingy, had popped/burst out of its tube/pipe and blurted oil everywhere, and it was of course burning on the manifold area. I drove her back home and took the orrible van to work instead. Any ideas why this should happen. (apart from the obvious, but I havnt checked the gear oil for ages and have done many journeys, so im sure it was in its holder correctly).

The only thing i can think of is, I did start her up and drive away in a bit of a hurry, against all advice to let her run a bit before pulling away, could i have done some damage ??

Check the breather to make sure it has not become blocked somehow. It is fitted to the dipstick tube, comes up in a loop and then goes back and exits around the rear of the gearbox casing on the RHS (Drivers)

Don't forget to re check the fluid level and top up if req'd. (It may well have been overfilled in the first place, and the hot weather has tipped the excess out thru the breather, or the top of the tube if the breather is blocked.)

Another unusual question, but it fits under the same header.
For some reason i placed the replacement gearbox with the bellhousing sitting flat on the floor. And then oil started flowing out from the sleeve in the input shaft. Is this normal? I looked in the manual but i could not find any kind of seal in the clutch bearing/sleeve area. I know that normaly gearboxes are not supposed to be sitting on the floor with the bellhousing down, and the input shaft is well above the oil level, but, i just wonder....

Manual or auto will leak the oil out if left standing that way, as you say they're not designed to be left that way, and when sitting correctly don't leak. (Well not much anyway :) )

Many thanks again Harvey, (can I hire you as my P6 chaperone). I will check the breather asap.

Its weird, (and im a bit of a mechanical dipstick anyway) but you dont always think of the obvious when this type of thing happens, makes one feel rather useless.
Cheers again.

And proves what a bonus the forum is.
Brilliant.
Don.
