HI All,
any help would be appreciated, my 3500s (4 spd) has always had a whiney gearbox (the whine dissapears when you put the clutch in), now I happen to have a spare box in the shed, but how will I know if that one is any good? and if it is in fact the gearbox and not something clutch related any test theories from anyone?
Cheers
Al

I think it's layshaft wear if the noise disappears when you depress the clutch, common on the P6's. Not sure if you can tell much by looking at the 'box unless it's obvious stuff like broken teeth or something. You may have to take a chance & just fit it. Again, layshaft noise is a common fault so there's a fair chance your spare will be noisy too.

I'd go for the 5 speed if you've got the inclination. I've been driving the estate around a bit (MOT'd now) and it's so nice to cruise at 60/70 with the engine just humming away at 2500 rpm. I remember before it would be quite frantic at these speeds.

Should be. But I've got no windows in the estate section at the moment and I can't resist flooring the throttle in 2nd and 3rd. It's like the world starts going backwards (Once i've calibrated the carb properly I'm going to get some 0-60 times it feels incredible but it could just be the noise!). Have to slow down when the exhaust fumes make my eyes sting at the moment so next job is to get those windows in!
