Gearbox lt77?

I've got a gearbox I bought years ago along with a rover v8 engine I think it's an LT77 type. Can anyone confirm?

looks like one but i'm no expert... would quite like one to fall into my car at an opportune moment though...

Yes an LT77. Going by the look of the stamped markings my guess would be suffix C because the last letter looks like the original stamping font, most likely a regular LT77 of SD1 origin. Without the original first 3 numbers/letters it would be hard to positively identify it's original application. Should be fine in a P6 behind an average V8 assuming it's not worn.

Pull the sump plug and have a look at what comes out on the magnet. It will have some debris on it as a part of general running, but if it looks like a fir tree then you may well have problems now or down the line.
They do need the correct spec oil to promote longevity and smooth operation, though.

Also worth giving the input shaft a wobble, there is likely to be a little bit of play, but not to the point where the sides of the input shaft touch the release sleeve. They have tapered bearings inside which once the original pre-load/shimming has gone out of spec allows the internals to move about and wear quicker.

They are strong gearboxes which will happily howl on for years!

I'd hope they should be ok in a P6 for the most part - the LT77 in my 3.5 EFI powered Landrover has taken some abuse (4-wheel wheelspin anyone?) and is touchwood ok so far. The first box I fitted when I converted it to v8 was bought and then sat in parents garage for a year and a bit before I fitted it. When I finally fitted it I drained the oil only to find it was half full of water! The previous owner must have pressure washed it clean or something. Lesson learnt - drain fluids on anything secondhand when purchased...

Even with half the box internals sat in water for that time the box still lasted over a year before it had to come out.

In all fairness, mine was probably due for overhaul when I turfed the auto box and went LT77.
Due to scarcity of bits I took what I could and ran with it, fitting the cam was the last straw for a very tired box.

Hi all I currently have a LT77 gearbox fitted but cannot identify where it's come from, in the history from owners past it just said heavy duty gearbox fitted.
The number is 14A0144950C searched all the normal Web sites.
Cheers.

It could be from a TR7, but those usually have a 'CL' somewhere in the number, at least all of the ones that I've encountered so far have. The current 'box in mine is from a TR7 and starts 14ACL, perhaps the 'CL' was dropped at some point. 15A appears to have been allocated to the TR8 'boxes, according to information I've read on a TR7 forum.

The only problem I had with an LT77 was on my TR7. Internal oil pump failed while doing 80 on the M25 late one night. Car getting slower and slower until I could make it to Clacket's lane services. Then ground to a halt. Apparently the fibre gears wear and fail.

The next one with need for identification o_O
It´s really not easy to get a LT77 box here in Germany. I always looked for Rover..., but now with this thread  I also looked for TR7 or TR8.
I´m waiting for a ser.no, but does this look like a LT77 ?
