Got a 1973 v8 , haven't used it for several months l drove a few miles to get some fuel , struggles to start it again , then put into Drive and just died , started again ,ticked over fine put into drive and died! Left at the side of the road went back after a few miles and drove it back home a few miles fine , left it running for a few minutes and Same problems again l put into gear ,jumps then dies , any ideas ?????

Start by working through all the normal engine tuning problems, points, dwell, timing, carbs to see if you find anything. If this only started after you added the fuel, that's another good place to start as well.

If it happened really suddenly, and there's a real lack of performance since it happened, and I had to guess without doing anything else at all, I'd say a needle had dropped out in one of the carbs.

Thanks
It did do the same last year when it got hot sitting in traffic , put it into drive and it would jump then stall , let it cool down and ok again.

What did you do to cure it that time then, or did you just leave it and it didn't re-occur?

Ok ,update, gearbox oil nearly empty , topped it up , drove round the block a few times fine , left it running for a few minutes jumped in and put into drive and it stalled again , fuel pump was clicking away ( plenty of fuel in it) m my v8 has always run hot and when it overheats it does the same ( put into drive and dies) , please advise me ,this is the main reason the car has been parked up for 6 months ,,it's so unreliable , something simple ???? Any ideas please
