Gear selector loose? 4 speed

when trying to engage gears the gear stick moves very far before engaging so far that it has ripped the rubber that covers it. Is this due to the mounts for the remote selector? please help!

I'm not sure but that could be the little "grape" on the bottom of the gearlever having fallen off, if you don't know what it is it's like a little black nylon blob on the bottom of the gearlever which engages with a corresponding size eye which in turn operates the gear rod linkage into the gearbox. If you remove the centre tunnel console you'll be faced with three 1/2" bolts in a plate, if you remove that the gearlever will follow, BUT before you go taking out the gear lever there is a procedure to setting up the gearlever when you replace it, so get this info to hand before you start. good luck

iv had a look and thats not it. there is a bar going from the selector to the box which is loose at the gear box end which is a pain to get at and might have to drop the box down to get at it.

That's the selector striker lever, and is another common fault when worn. If it's a Series 2 with the aluminium remote then the rear of the box will need to be dropped down to fit a new one.
