fuel tank sender unit removal

Yes Steve, it is.

The unit is held in by a 'bayonet' type fitting at the bottom of the tank just above & to the front of the diff. Just make sure you have run the fuel level down & drain the tank properly (& safely); the unit is right at the bottom of the tank!

Please see my posts at page 7 of this thread for further details: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=12047&start=90 This was on a 4 cylinder but they are basically the same.

Hi Phil, found it! Is there a draincock/tap for the tank, I have no idea to how much fuel is in the tank? I only got the car yesterday and am a bit green with Rovers, although I've owned and fixed a Zephyr 4 for 16 years and they are relatively primitive!

No drain tap I'm afraid, you'll have to figure out which line is the reserve (it usually has a lighter coloured hose) and disconnect that one - you'll see why when you take the sender out.

At either end of the crossmember that the rear trailing arms are bolted to or, if you're happy with the sills, put the stands under the sill ends near the jacking points with some long bits of wood.

hi, I did mine a little while back... I bought a fluid transfer pump from machine mart and syphoned as much as I could out of the tank (1.5 20 litre jerry cans) was 100% sure the pipe was at the bottom of the tank etc etc. took off the main feed first and got covered as well as filling up the remainder of the jerry can plus a bit. then had to go and get another jerry can for the reserve.

someone had undersealed over the ring so even though it turned it didn't drop out and wasn't immediately apparent it was loose. Infact if memory serves I stopped for a cuppa and went back and found the ring on the floor lol!!

Putting back was just a case of screwing the ring in as far as I could by hand then giving it a couple of taps with a screwdriver once I had everything lined up properly.

hope this helps

Hi, seeing as I'm awaiting my workshop manual I'm still a little miffed by the unit and array of fuel lines and neither of the nuts turn. I have two rubber hoses feeding into one pipe to sender unit and another rubber hose feeding into a single pipe in the sender unit, is the one fed by two hoses the reserve?

Sender out and minimal fuel loss, about 20L in cans! Does anyone know if the olives on the fuel sender unit are just compression fit or brazed/soldered on?

Sounds like your fuel lines or send unit have been messed about with. On a standard UK car there should be two fuel lines from the sender that go to the reserve tap in the engine bay.

I think the olives are compression fit. The plastic hose is only a push fit onto the steel pipes anyway.

Third pipe, yes, mate of mine has confirmed that and helped me re-fit the sender unit. All working now, onto the next job, (steering side rod).
