Fuel Reserve Tap

Hello
My fathers 3500S has a fuel leak which looks as if coming from the reserve tap,

Is there an easy way of removing the tap? i can only just get my fingers to it.

Thank you
Mark

Hi Mark,

I am assuming when you say that you can only just get your fingers on it that it is behind the engine and not beneath the fuel tank :? , as some are fitted there.

You don't need to remove it completely, disconnect the cable, loosen the grub screw and withdraw the arm complete. Replace the '0' ring with a fuel resistant Vitron item, refit the arm, tighten the grub screw and reconnect the cable.

Owing to the location and the fact that the engine is in the way, don't expect to have it done in a hurry. If you have gnomes or children, cover their ears so they don't learn a lot of new words

Isn't the wwitch just between two take off points? If so then all you need do is plumb the fuel line to the reserve pickup and do away with the valve altogether if that doesn't bother you.

You access the reserve tap from above, not below, so the starter can stay where it is.

When we oldies need help with techno stuff, :? we always ask our kids, and they fix it no problem! :)
Small hands would really suit this task,so dangle a kid in the engine bay, with the right tools in hand, and give them instructions!
Its always best to start them young anyway,so why not with a nice fiddly job!
OH!,And in the interests of health and safety, its best to turn off the engine and disconnect the battery before dangling said kid!

I did manage to have a look at the tap again last night, the leak is coming from the pipe nearest the bulkhead, i nipped this up to see if that will sort it, if not i will have to take the tap off and start again.

Is a leaking reserve tap a common fault?
if so what should i be looking for?
someone mentioned an O ring, wheres that go?

Sorry for the questions but spannering on a P6 is all new to me

Thanks

It's not so much a fault , just that the original o ring will not tolerate modern fuel as well as the vitron ones sold by most of the usual suspects , try Mark Grey for one , they're pence , and can be fitted in a half hour or so . just have something handy to stem the flow of fuel while your doing it . If it's leaking from one of the unions off the tap try nipping it up when the engine is warm and their is a bit of warmth in that area .
:D
