Fuel Pump

Hi all .
What do we think of electric fuel pumps ? What are you running , where's it positioned , how's it plumbed/wired in etc ?
I'm thinking i'd like to put one under the bonnet ( as oppose under the car ) and run it before the mechanical pump as a back up . :? Ideas , thoughts please :D
 
Hi Stina,

I fitted a Facet electronic pump under the fuel tank during 1991, running it in series with the mechanical pump, so the same idea that you have now, except the location is different.

Personally, I tend to think that running it within the engine bay will defeat the purpose of having a reliable back up in terms of offsetting vapourisation issues, certainly from an Australian perspective in terms of ambient temperature. You may well be fine given the much cooler temps of the U.K.

The mechanical pump will pull the fuel without issue through the Facet when it is not in operation. I do not know if this will also occur with electric pumps of different manufacture. When needed, the Facet can be switched on and in combination the two pumps will deliver an unbroken stream of fuel. No overflow problems occur. WIth the Facet, there is no need to run a pressure regulator, but again with other pumps you will need to investigate.

A nice little touch is to fit said Facet (Bendix) pump to the rear like Air-con cars and retain the mechanical pump but remove the guts of the pump and lever arm so that the body then acts as a accumulator, the added bonus being you can keep the factory pipework to and from what was the pump.

I fitted a facet pusher pump to the rear of the car, this instantly cured the vapourisation issues I was geting in the summer heat. I also relocated the reserve tap too, although I need to sort out extending the cable to it somehow.

Contrary to what some people say, my pump is quiet to the point that I can't hear it running from inside the car. Having said that it is a very old pump so maybe thats why its quiet. :D

I've a facet square pump under the rear seat. It really clatters away, and is quite audible when the engine is idling despite the rubber mounts.. :?
 
Thanks guys , anyone got pictures of their installs ? Have i got to put it under the car ? I'd rather it in the engine bay ! What about wiring it up , where to take a live from ? Could i rig it so that it'll pump when there is a pressure drop , then stop when the pressure is normal ( the SU pumps on the moggy , MG etc stop pumping when the float chambers are full ) More info please :D

I'm guessing it would push fuel through the mechanical pump , but would the mechanical pump suck through it when it was turned off :? ? Would just a 12v+ feed be o.k or would it need a relay . I know it'd need to be switched off with the ignition to avoid any mishaps !
Again i'm guessing but would it stop pumping when it's reached a certain pressure like the old SU types ? In which case it could be wired without a switch , just an ignition switched live and it would only come into play when the mechanical pump wasn't coping ?

Honestly unless you are going for super originality I would just delete the mech pump. Even if you are staying original, who's going to look down there?

I hear what your saying . I'm looking for a back up really , the mechanical pump keeps up , i would like the electric pump for those rear occasions when the sun is out ! I have had experience of electric pumps letting me down . Just like the idea of it as a fail safe . :D

Im still on my original P6 electric pump [ Im a/c'd ] So there is a good reference for going that way .
What fuel vaporisation /Starvation ? Never seen it happen on my watch .
The electrical pump I had in a Daimler SP250 used to die some days . A whack with a heavy object got it ticking every time .
You can always have that as a back up !!! A heavy object i.e.

I got an oil pump upgrade kit on your recommendation !! - never been better .
 
I thought the huco was meant to replace the mechanical pump completely too. It's a puller so dont think it will work like the rear mounted pumps in series. It is however meant to be quiet and perfectly suited to pulling into the engine bay.
 
The facet I am using is (based on the corrosion on the body of it) the original unit from my 1984 Landrover 90. Its one of the cylindrical bodied ones, like the red/silver tops you can buy now. So far so good, not let me down so far...

I'm a bit slow here but i have a couple of electric pumps in the shed if you want to have a play with them?
I even know where they are too!
one is an under the car one and the other an engine bay item
as usual , I haven't a clue about them but they may fuel your imagination (pun intended)
and don't forget to support the samoyed in the crufts final sunday

Ah ha , now i may of solved another of your issues . The under bonnet one is on the Almond V8 ( Nice colour that ! ) From what i've learned here that is a pusher pump , ( i know it's a facet pump ) and would explain it's reluctance to go any further than Poulner hill ! as it should be fitted back at the tank , it's probably fine ticking over with no heavy demand on it , but can't cope with the bigger demand when asked .
If the Samoyed wins it's only coz i was to late to enter our jack Russell ! :LOL:
 
hi stina -i have just ordered facet pump-hope it cures problem which is -when parked facing upwards on hill car will be difficult to start and in fact has cut out until it gets on flat-hoping fuel supply issues i intend to remove mechanical pump -any way it should be on by thursday -so sunny now of for a ride round--andy
