Front windscreen dismantling

Hello to the forum,

I had a topic running "Leaking heater unit", but it appears, that the front windscreen (thanks to Peter ZRH) requires attention first. The metal channel is missing, the mid support is missing and so the seal for the metal channel is missing. For this approx 4 cartridges of some sealing mass was used. I´ve got all parts now from Wins including also the top U-Form rubber.
I own the car only for some weeks (and still cannot drive, waiting for new GAZ shocks to pass the local historic car MOT :| ), so I´m still not familiar with P6 special solutions. The support design for the windscreen is great, but is it the way it seems, meaning dismantling the roof gutters (the side ones or also the top one ?), cutting away the old rubber(s), lower the lh and rh supports and take out the windscreen ??
Can it be done alone (maybe with wooden support pieces to rest the screen on it) or is it essential to have a 2nd person ?
I´ve seen, that the top roof gutters are sealed between the vinyl roof and the gutters. Do I have to seal other areas too ?

When I bought the car, I found some rust on the passenger side floor panels (lh drive), thank god, only surface rust, but the carpeting was rotten and stinks awfully, so I´ve cutted it away. Car always was in Rover and Jaguar garages  (all receipts kept from the former owner). I think, I must remove the heater over the winter, I´m not sure, if rust is between heater and body, but as I saw the terrible sealing repair at the windscreen, my suggestion was, that this part was the reason for the water problem. Hopefully. Anyway, this must be sorted, the main screen rubber breaks as soon as you try to bend it.

Many thanks for your help.

Greetings from Stuttgart, Jörg

If you drop the screen down by undoing the adjusters at the lower edge, you can remove the screen complete with the seal attached.
Then install the new seal off the car and reverse your actions.
I don't think there's any need to remove stainless trim, unless you want to check for corrosion?

Hi Jörg
The stainless trims on the A pillars are only held in place with rivets. Easy to drill the old rivets out and have a look at the actual pillar, because this is a known moisture trap and there can be significant rust beneath the shiny trim! Simple enough to rivet the trims back in place.
Re-fitting the windscreen is much easier with a second pair of hands to help.
The vinyl on the roof should wrap around beneath the actual roof panel and there should not be any need for sealant along the rain gutters. The gutter trim can also hide rust issues.
Does your Rover have a sunroof? A sliding steel sunroof has water drainage pipes that run down the roof pillars behind the stainless trim at the front and behind the vinyl trimmed rear pillar covers. These fill with leaves and crud and often lead to further corrosion issues. Any sign of bubbling beneath the vinyl roof covering?
Best regards from a P6 owner in Berlin.

For 10 minutes work, its worth checking and doing any repairs under the stainless strip.

Secondly drill a couple holes from the inside of the car and pump some dinitrol inside a A pillar.

The A-pillar panels I removed yesterday, they were fixed with screws. The top gutters are still on the car, I will take them off, when I start the windscreen work.
The A-pillars are free of rust, the car has no sunroof and no bubbles under the vinyl :)
But I have found also some rust in the passengers side air entry (over the pedals), so I will also remove the heater box (which has only one rotten drain pipe at the side...).
By the way, I´ve treated the A pillars with Fluid Film 8)

I do not know, who has made this windscreen repair, but he should never meet me
The screen was totally fixed with a sealant, when I say totally, I mean totally. It took me 4 hours to cut out this shit and the original
rubber before the screen could be moved.
On the A-pillar on the passenger side (where the rubber laid in) is some rust, one spot some more, but thank god, I did this now and not in winter.
It will be a nice job to remove now all the rest of the sealant and then treat the pillars with Brantho Korrux.

Hi,
think, I have removed all sealant from the windscreen area this evening....
Have received the main window rubber, the mid support, the metal channel and the rubber for the metal channel from Wins already (the window rubber was worn out, all other parts were missing).

http://www.rover-classics.co.uk/images/ ... gs_jpg.htm

What I did not get, is the rubber under the dashboard (part no. 372373). I think, this is only to prevent bypass air at the dashboard air-openings, so I have ordered some cellular rubber 15x10 mm.
Or has this rubber any other purpose. The rest of the original rubber under the dashboard looks like a form of cellular rubber.
Then, I did also not get the rubbers (4034 / 2pcs) between the lh and rh support and the metal channel. I´m not sure about this function. Is this any special strong rubber or can I use also a cellular rubber piece ??
Thanks for your help.
