Front Spring Bump Stop Clearance?

Hello All,
could someone tell me what the clearance between the bump stops in the front springs should be? I measured the clearance on mine (new springs fitted) and it is about 1 inch. This strikes me as too close but I'm just guessing.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom,

The clearance as best I can ascertain between the bump stop and the spring cup on my Rover's front suspension is about 4cm.

Have you fitted another pair of springs then? Are these ones sitting nice and straight?

Thanks, Ron, for taking the time to measure. I did fit new springs from a 3500 V8 model because I wanted to increase stiffness. I also fitted a Ford 5 litre V8, along with a number of other mods. That has increased the weight at the front thus compressing the springs more than stock. I'm guessing that the 2.5 - 3 cm that I'm measuring is about right, based on your measurement of 4 cm for a stock setup.

Since my first post, I mounted a small video camera to watch the action of the front springs and don't see any contact between the bump stops. Also I put a piece of witness tape on the stop and see no evidence of contact so probably am OK.

OTH the springs are not exactly straight. The first front coil is angled up a small amount, decreasing clearance between the top of the coil and the sheet metal just above it. I'm in the process of trying to determine what is happening here and have several theories, none of which seem to be proving correct.

Cheers,
Tom
