It all depends upon how the automatic transmission was built as to how sharp the shifts will be. A well set up auto can be as quick if not quicker than a manual, that's why drag racing cars use automatic transmissions, where every fraction of a second counts.

Yes i know about drag racing and lenco transmissions , B and M shifters , and all that old malarky .
I just made a totally throw away comment , for a laugh , about the lazy nature ( unmodified ) of the auto , in a thread about something totally different :shock:
If i was inclined to defend my " joke " ( it's a little dulled now ) i'd say where a manual will pull in the higher gears , and revs equal forward momentum ( all being well with the clutch ) without the lock up of more modern auto boxes the 35/65 looses allot of performance through the converter /gearbox having to catch up to the revs of the engine .

I agree that an older autobox will 'slip', to some degree, via its torque converter whilst at cruising speed. But I didn't really like the restrictive feel of the modern autoboxes with that lock-up top gear; I much prefer the traditional autoboxes that have that elasticity to the transmission.
