front pads

As the title suggests i want to fit new pads :D
With the engine upgrade sorted i'm itching to move onto the next project . I'm happy with the rear brakes after i re sealed the calipers 18 months or so ago . Short of having a quick glance at the front pads 6 months or so ago i've never given the fronts much attention . I'm planning to fit new pads before the mot ( Feb ) and do the near side wheel bearing while i'm at it ( i have a new bearing kit )
So a few questions .
* Do i go for the original pads with the wire sensor ( as mine has ) ?
* Is it best to have a new fitting kit to hand ,ready ?
* What do we think about braided hoses ( they would only be on the front for now ) and anyone have a link to a good and not overly expensive set ?
* Anything P6 specific to watch out for ?
:D

I've always been happy to de-rust the pins and clean up the anti squeal shims and reuse those, getting some new retaining clips and be done. But there's always something to be said for that new feel...

Hi Stina,

What happened to the original wheel bearing that you intend to replace? What are the symptoms that it is displaying? What brand of the replacement that you have?

Ron.

Hello Ron .
The bearing sort of "graunches" when i'm reversing up the drive ( unless i've picked up a plant pot on the bumper  )
Sometimes i can hear it in other slow speed situations . I adjusted it a year or so back , and it was o.k for a while , no other issues that side i can detect . I have a bearing kit here so if i think i need to do it while i'm about the brakes i will .
As for the make of the bearing , it's out in my spares stash and it's pouring down :!: I'll have a look when i come to do it . It was given to me( with a few other bits ) by a guy that gets to a few local shows who used to have a p6 . He was an engineer on the Hawker Hunter so guessing he knew the difference between good and bad :D

Hi Stina,

We (or to be more correct Gavin) fitted DS2500 pads just before "The Retro" this year, a pad he knew from his Hillclimb days. I can confirm that they are truely excellent and I know not everyone pushes on like we do but these pads give great feel etc.... right from cold. I do know they weren't cheap but he never told me exactly how much!!! We also use braided hose's all round but I never drove the car with anything else so can't comment on the improvement but I can say we have great brakes now :D Jag rear brakes do help that but to be fair they were pretty good when all Rover.

Tim

PS as always Gav. keeps the blog well up to date: http://p6v8.wordpress.com/

Hi Stina,

The hubcaps can sometimes make a noise which could be misconstrued for something somewhat more sinister. I am assuming that you have driven around without the hubcaps on so as to rule out this possibility?

No not done that Ron , but the oldie style hub caps were on Her when i first noticed it , now we are running the Oh so cool "S" style trims and still hearing it . I'm not overly worried , been up around 90ish ( on my private drive officer  ) and all is quiet . I'll have an investagae when i get in there . :D

Kman's reference to DS2500 Ferodo race pads had me look them up - £115 a set on eBay...

Then there's the second, bracing benefit in having a good argument about it afterwards.

...

To be honest, expensive brake pads that do the braking thing better are a worthwhile upgrade in my books. I'm getting my servo cylinder sleeved next time I do anything to the Rover. If the brakes aren't significantly nicer for it some aftermarket pads are on the cards.

Right this morning .
Standard pads (with warning sensors) , new fitting kit , and goodridge braided hoses . No problems . Test drive , the pedal feels firm , and i would imagine they will bed in over the first hundred miles or so and feel even better .
I can have fun in equal measure now pinning passengers to the seat , then throwing them into the dash
Thanks for advice all :D

Remind me not to accept a lift from you Stina

And there was me thinking you enjoyed your P6 best when just wafting along nicely, but now you make it sound like it's a new ride at Alton Towers

Then again, it is too great a temptation not to introduce your passengers to the car in that way

I don't think most of them do Rich , i'm just bigging it up and having a laugh . Mines reasonably powerful , and pretty quick off the mark , certainly sounds good , I reckon most of the grunt is lost through the auto box . I'd put a manual in it but then i think it'd loose it's cruiser status and it's originality and character . I.d like a manual to play with as well , then i'd need more space and more money :? . Oh and time , and money :D

Hi Stina,

The power delivered to the ground through the rear wheels is typically around 30% less than that seen at the rear of the crankshaft. So if your engine was say delivering 150HP to the rear of the crankshaft at 5000rpm or so, then the power delivered to the ground would be in the region of 105HP at that speed. At all other speeds, the power will be less.

Did you do anything with the wheel bearing or did it turn out not to be necessary?

Ron.

Yeah i know that Ron i'm just saying the 65 auto will never be as "sharp" as a manual . I'm more than happy with how it goes , and love the " cruiser " character of the thing .
The wheel bearing , i felt minimal play , so i re adjusted it and packed it with grease , we'll see how it goes , i have the new one if i feel the need to do it . :D
