Flywheel

My P6 V8 engine is currently mounted to a 4 speed gearbox.
Is the flywheel on the engine suitable for an SD1 5 speed box or does it have to be modified?

I already have the correct clutch fork and pivot, so cant think of any other reason why the P6 engine wouldnt mate with the Sd1 box???

Yes but, No but...

The SD1 LT77 (or an R380 ex LDV) is physically bigger and you really want the transmission tunnel from an auto car (or the car of course..). Mind you if you had a REALLY shot floor and felt like being really ambitious with the welding...

The agenda is right though, the car really benefits from the overdrive top gear.

The 5 speed from the SD1 fits into the 3500S tunnel with no problems other than removing the standard rear mounting brackets. the flywheel is no problem, but you do need the complete SD1 clutch, not just the centre plate.

Fitting the lump inside the car isnt an issue at this point.
I just want to find out if I can bolt the SD1 box straight onto the back of my P6 engine and have the whole mass sat on the deck.

I will obviously need to use the SD1 clutch kit, pivot and release bearing, but is there anything that I would have to change on the engine itself in order to just attach the box?

The flywheel doesnt need skimming? and the imput shaft will match up ok?

Is it really just a case of plug and play?

You will also need the SD1 spigot bush, and with the complete clutch it will all bolt straight on. (as long as you have the correct V8 bellhousing)

Excelent, well I just need to get the box stripped and checked and buy an SD1 clutch kit then im good to go!

Thanks agan.:)

Hang on... is there more than 1 type of V8 bellhousing?

The gearbox I have came out of an MGB Roadster V8 conversion. The PO was upgrading to an R380.

Its the one with the plastic release bearing.

I am talking with a guy from TM transmission about rebuilding my gearbox. I know I need a slave cylinder and push rod.
How easy/difficult is it to change the spiggot bush anyway?

I havent actually tried doing anything like this before!

Spiggot bush just fits between the centre hole in the flywheel and the end of the gearbox input shaft. Usually drops out when you take the gearbox off or clutch off.

The spigot bush shouldn't just fall out when the clutch/flywheel is removed, it should be a tight fit in the rear of the crank. Also when renewing the bush or changing a gearbox the running clearance should be checked and if req'd reset to avoid clutch spin.
