fitting an electric choke / res fuel

Hey guys! So recently I've decided instead of locating a choke cable and res fuel cable I've decided I want it all electric.
I'm aware you still need a cable to the carby and res fuel tank, although a solenoid or something similar to pull the cable automatically would be preferred.

Has anyone completed this successfully? What would be the best way / parts to go about doing this? I don't mind if there is a switch or anything as I don't mind if it is automatic. I just don't want the whole pulling out the lever and having to push it back in.

Thanks, Andy

I suppose you could have an electrically operated valve to work the fuel reserve changeover but I can't think of anyway of controlling how much choke it needs other than convert to fuel injection. Or fit the AED ( Harvey is this correct ?) device from a P5 but this would be a backward step in my opinion

One of the main reasons that i like old cars is that they are less complex so there are only a few things that can go wrong. Are you sure that you want to replace something as simple as a choke cable that never fails with something as complex as an automatic enrichment devise what could be a constant source of troubles?
Think twice....

No no no no no!!! AED's are the work of the devil! :D

EFI is the best route forward.

P.S. If you've got PAS on the car, if you don't have to pull the choke out you'll get no exercise at all! :p

You can buy electric switches to switch between tanks.

Hey dave! Thanks very much for the reply.

I was thinking still having the cable running to the carby and fuel reserve, although have a motor pushing and pulling it when required. I don't mind having a switch to turn the motor on and off! It would be simple to setup much like a solanoid off a car door for central locking!

You could use a radio control model servo to operate the choke, however you need to remember that a choke is a variable device not just on and off (although most people operated them like that), so you would really need to link it to a temperature sensor on the engine.

It actually wouldn't be too tricky to knock something up (if you know a bit about electronics that is), to link a standard temperature sender to the PWM input on the servo. About 18 years ago I used to make and sell electronic speed controllers for radio control cars, so I've got a decent grasp of how the servos work. However I'm not too sure how a servo would cope with hours of continuous use, they tend to be used 15mins at a time in the models.

But why would you want to continue with the fuel reserve facility at all? Just delete it and run everything from the reserve pipe!

If memory servers there is an electric conversion kit for cars originally fitted with an AED - does anyone else have anything this banging around in the sludge at the back of ther brain?

ISTR there was a conversion kit favoured by Jag people, but I can't for the life of me remember where I saw it...

IIRC this is just a switch to bypass the temperature control (Otter switch) so you can just switch the choke (AED) on and off, but that's it, either on or off, with no variation as it warms up.

Hi guys! Wow thanks so much for all of the response. I was considering going electric because trying to find a new choke cable with the original push pull knob is hard. Nowhere in Australia has parts! I couldn't find one wreckers with a rover!! I only have my 2 rovers which both choke cables have been stretched!

I may make a modification somewhere to the cables In which I currently have! It's worth a shot. As I know they are variable not just in 2 positions. So a motor would be kind of out of the question for this purpose! Thanks, Andy

Thanks.

I know it's more expensive, but why not log onto the UK version of Ebay www.ebay.co.uk and look at the Classic Car Spares Rover section. Cost of shipping to Australia is not that great.
