Fire Brigade Wireless Car Red

What do they mean by wireless???

Do you think the paint work is the original fire brigade paint work? Would be worth saving, a change from the usual (but very good) police P6's we see at shows.

i'm rather surprised it managed to escape from the fire service with its livery and fittings still in place. Surely it's more likely to be a car that's been dolled up for film work etc?

My thoughts exactly. Similar to the 'Police car' that does the rounds of the shows down south (HRL999L - on the cover of the latest 'Freewheel'). It's a standard car modded up to look like a Police car.

Yes that's why I asked if it was original paint work. I 'think' ex police cars have their police bits remove to stop people pretending to be police, is it possible that this is not the case for fire brigade vehicles and so are more likely sold intact???

You could be right there Richard, there are several ex Fire Brigade vehicles knocking about. There's a six wheeled Range Rover Fire Tender in a compound next to the railway line at Aynho in Oxfordshire which looks like it's ready to respond to a 999 call.

Nidge

Looks like another fire vehicle behind it!!
My uncle says it looks perfectly genuine and he is an ex station commander!
He remembers them from his operational days!
His station,"Welsh valleys", had one of the first brigade range rovers to do the same job + more!

Hi all

HRL 999L Is one of mine , what is the freewheel mag????

The fire car is also based down south somewhere near Portsmouth , i have seen it at a few shows , quite rotten and faded paintwork , but cheap enough at that money .

If this is real (and I really hope it is) then it looks superb... It really does deserve to be investigated so we can be sure of its history. I'd love to see this one as it really does make a change to the, equally fascinating, Police P6's that are out there...

Freewheel is the Rover Sports Register magazine. Your car appears on the cover of the latest issue.

Hi just noticed wing mirror on door is the same as mine I know its not original but hey my series one came with a couple of them in a box of spare parts I have used one on my V8 because they are very handy for towing the caravan as the black mirror part flips out for much better rear view. They look period I have never seen another like it here in NZ were they a common thing in the 70s?

The bad news is the London Fire Brigade know nothing of this car, so unless the present owner has paperwork to the contrary, its a made up ... 'what it might have looked like, if one had have existed!' ...because this didn't!

LFB Archivists have told me, that the light box on the roof dates from the early 1980's and would probably have ordained a LFB Station Officer's allegro roof because that is what they used apparently, when those light boxes were in use.

That said, the LFB Archivists did confirm that, the LFB did own one Red P6 3500 auto, from 1973 to 1976, but it was unmarked and only had a blue light on the roof when needed courtesy of a mag-mount, although apparently it didn't do the black vinyl roof much good. They also have records of a black Rover P4 100 which they owned in 1961 as well.

If anyones interested ,why not just ring the owner direct , i know hes a member of the Fire preservation club , perhaps best to ask him about his car before speculating its history

Mark did some good research there. I was in the London Fire Brigade from 1974 and they never had a Rover P6.... Morris', Wolseleys, Austins and Fords but not Rovers. I can only think it was a TV or film hybrid car which is naughty as they would have needed permission to use the GLC/LFB coat of arms :?

Read the research bit again , London Fire said that they did have a red p6 , Londons a big place so i cant believe you know every car/engine in the service. Like i say ring the bloke and ask him!! hes in the fire preservation so will tell you the history .

I spent a long time in the London Fire Brigade and got around a lot and attended too numerous fires to count.... I'll say no more other than to say.... I still suggest it is a hybrid
