Fill 'er up - Why so slow?

Hi

I'm finding getting fuel into my V8 a real chore. Not only does it take a painfully large amount, but it takes a painful amount of time to do it! Why does it keep clicking the pump off? The other night, the fuel pump itself timed out because it took so long!

Is it ok to just aim the nozzle through the main hole and then just flood it in?

This is a common enough problem, I also found that this happened to me.

The reason it is cutting out is because there is an overfill sensor on the end of the nozzle, when you put the nozzle in the filler neck try not to push the end against the metal. When it is hard up against the neck and petrol comes out at anything other than a trickle it thinks your tank is full to the brim so cuts out.

If you try holding it so there is about an inch or so between the end of the nozzle and the filler neck it should go in quicker also try turning the gun upside down.

Arthuy is spot-on. It's the near 90 degree bend under the decker panel that causes the cut-out / blowing back.

As arthuy says, hold the nozzle 'upside down'. (I often park at the wrong side of the pump so that I run the hose over the boot area so that the nozzle is vertical).

How many times have I told forecourt attendants in the past that it blows back if hurried, only for them to nod knowingly....then for the petrol to go all over! Better now that nearly all are self service.

In Australia all the cars have these annoying anti syphion things in the filler neck. I have the same problem with all my P6s and have resorted to pulling the rotten things out.
I also have found that holding the filler half way out helps. I think that we have all been burped on at some time, usually on the way to a party.
