Excessive oil consumption - mystery farting

Gentlemen - after a quiret period I've noticed that my V8-Rover is a heavy drinker - not only petrol, but also oil. No leak/dripping to be seen on the garage floor. Engine bay clean like an operating table. Oil pressure spot on. Oil 10W/40 - Now, at the traffic light (waiting for the green light and at a stand still) I have noticed to my embarrassment that sometimes there suddenly comes and enormous "fart" and the poor bastard behind me is covered in blueish smoke, then all is clear and she drives like an angel (no farting, no smoking). Question: a broken piston ring? Valves?? Regards,
Chris Varming+++

Wouldn't it be valve guides/seals rather than piston rings ?
Could be worth cleaning out the breathers/pipes

Rover100rich: the farting is almost soundless, I've experienced this phenomina 6-8 times within the last 2 months, it's when I'm at a stand still and then start mooving, looking in the rear mirror I see the guy behind me covered in a blueish sort of smoke, after this there is no more trouble and the Rover behaves like an angel. regards, chris varming

Chris, can you do a compression test? This might reveal any problems you have with pistons rings or valves.

JVY: a compression test will deffinately be next on the agenda. I suspect the valves myself, but cling to the hope that it could be the thin oil 10W/40 - now I'll get 20W/50 and see what happens....
and Dave: noisy farting gives your neighbour a chance to flee - soundless farting is killing! Regards, Chris

SBD, silent but deadly, from memory I think this first entered the global lexicon Via the BBC series "Brass" but it seems that it has taken on a whole new meaning :mrgreen:

Running ok normally, but emitting blue smoke after sitting at traffic lights at tickover sounds like oil getting down the valve guides to me..

V8P6B - O.K. suppose your theory was spot on - what will be the cure? insert new valve guides?

could be cured by moving from 10/40 to 20/50 - thicker oil wont get burnt as much.

Rich.

My thoughts also, I think changing your oil to the correct grade and spec is a first start in the cure.

Gentlemen, I thought I would let you all in on the mystery farting which has now been solved by a local mechanic here in Tranemo, Sweden where I am working at the moment. For a long time I had a sudden loss of brake fluid from the reservoir but no dripping on the parking space. I asked the mechanic how the brake fluid could disappear. He thought for a moment and asked me if I had ever experienced a sudden cloud of smoke from the exhaust (= farting). YES!!! - Well, then it is a leak from the servo and the brake fluid goes through the system and that makes the farting. Doesn't that make sense? - When I return to DK I'll dismantle the servo and fix new O-rings and hopefully: Voila! No more loss of brake fluid, no more farting and no more embarrasment! - Why didn't you figure that out - thought you knew all about farting???? ......

Because you never mentioned anything about losing brake fluid as well. Give half of the available information, and you'll always get a half-arsed answer.

So very true. Information provided should always be as concise as possible. As an example, when a person presents to their Doctor, if they only tell of half the symptoms and receive a wrong diagnosis as a result, the only person that they can blame is themselves!

Ron.

That's what comes of not treating a loss of brake fluid as serious .If you haven't got brakes you shouldn't be worrying about making your car go . Priorities !
