Engine swap

Anyone know of any other engines tried in the P6 2000 Auto? I love my P6 and wouldn't want to change it or upgrade it to a V8 (I accualy want to be able to afford to drive it), however my head gasket is not in a good way and I would like a bit more bang for my buck and if possible more MPG. Am I just asking for trouble and expense? Or is there a relatively economical solution?

Do you have electronic ignition and electric fan on yours? From what i'm aware it behaves pretty much as a modern 2 litre (30+ mpg) in terms of economy. I think the only reason to change is the engine is knacked or you want a *lot* more power. (Unless you're going for a 2200 which is probably pretty straightforward.. but not a lot of gain??)

Rich.

As you have to do your head gasket, why not convert it to TC!!!

Personally I'd leave it as a SC, much simpler to keep in tune and more economical. Replace the headgasket, fit electronic ignition / electric fan etc.. and get the tuning spot on, probably the best you can do without spending a load of cash.

Other than swapping for a 2200SC / TC any non-standard swap is going to be a pain and cause all sorts of insurance / DVLA problems.

I guess you could convert to manual, which would give you slightly better performance and MPG.

In my experience the jump to 2200 makes a considerable difference on the Auto cars. I'd stay SC for the Auto application if it were mine :)

But doesn't that requires a number of alterations? (throttle, choke, exhaust, etc). If keeping the automatic, some work on placing a mount for the kickdown cable.

hermione149 has done it on his, but I'm sure he's said in the past the alteration work is a nightmare!

You could convert to fuel injection I suppose? Not sure how easy it would be to do but it could be worth looking into.

The V8 is pretty much as economical as the four-cylinders (it's actually a lighter engine IIRC). My dad's old 3500S did about 25MPG combined, 29.5 on a long motorway run, and that with very few alterations (Lumenition electronic ignition, an Austin 1100 secondary header tank to stop it chucking coolant overboard). Modern fuel injection and a five-speed gearbox should see the average MPG go up to about 30...

I'm sure I once heard of a P6 in South Africa which had been converted to run an Alfa Romeo 2-litre Twin Spark engine, plus the Alfa's 5-speed rear transaxle gearbox and De Dion rear end (more drifty than a stock P6 rear end IIRC)... I'd love that, actually. Even better, the Busso V6...
