Engine Block swap

I have a 2000TC and after 120K the block has just about had it.
I bought an engine from a 2000SC auto with the intention of replacing my block with the one from the auto. My 2000TC engine number is 44606356A and the SC auto is 40512498J.
Progress of the swap has been slow with one thing and another i.e. one step forward etc. One thing I did not expect was that I found it impossible to fit the flywheel to the auto crankshaft, it appears that I will have to use my original crankshaft in the replacement SC block . Is an auto crankshaft different to a manual one? georgecook

You need to change the spigot bearing to get it to fit, not the crankshaft, they are the same. Check which head gasket you need, IIRC suffix A engines use a steel shim gasket, but the suffix J will use a composite gasket. The WM gives you the info you need.

First, I'm surprised that 120K has worn out the block. But that's another topic. As for which head gasket to use, the way to tell the difference between the blocks (the early, thin steel head gasket, block is .013" taller) is to look at the front where the serial number is. Just below that, next to the big aluminum plug, the later blocks will have a little boss cast in. So if both blocks are identical in appearance there, you'll need the later head gasket.

Vern. The bores in the original block are badly scored and a rebore was necessary
The older block from the auto has only 34K. Miles showing on the clock and believed to be genuine. Both blocks have the little boss cast in
