However the KV6 engines do not blow headgaskets

You've not seen the version in the 800 then :D Head gasket failure roughly every 30-40k miles.
No one in their right mind would touch one out of an 800! Or a kia sedona. However, after that they got it sorted and it was fine. Best one is apparently the 2.5 litre version from the 75 with a turbo charger. Didnt make many though so bit hard to lay your hands on.

A KV6 sounds like a V12 with a good exhaust IMHO. :)

Rick,
let es know how that conversion panned out, please!

Would be a nice nieche product, offering complete conversion
for a fixed affordable price (without carting the lot to Bucarest and back).

Bandito

To be honest I'd rather use the Honda V6 from the 827 or Legend, they have proved to be virtually bomb proof, easily exceeding 250k miles.
Problem is they were never RWD and I've measured one up for the P6 and it leaves about 1inch each side of the rocker covers being 90degree rather than 60degree :(

T16 conversion is perfect if you ask me, I'm just looking for a gearbox that is cheap, easy to find, and reasonably easy to attach. I know the LT77 from the 2ltr SD1 or Sherpa van fit, but in 18months of looking I've never seen one on ebay ! Ford Type 9 would be easiest to find and cheapest, but they would be marginal with the 200bhp turbo T16, probably fine for the 140bhp non-turbo though. Other ford option is the MT75 from the late granada v6 models, but they're also tricky to find. Oh they were used in the discovery MPi, anybody fancy 4WD ?

Main benefit of the T16 (or the M16 for that matter) is that there is a bolt on engine backplate to attach the gearbox, so basically you "JUST" make a new back plate to suit your gearbox. Other benefits are they are cheap to source, cheap to fix, reasonably fuel efficient, reliable (non-turbo) and powerfull (turbo).

Once I get it sorted I'll be happy to do conversion kits.

You've never found an Lt77 on ebay???
YOu can't have been looking very hard then!
Don't bother with one from a sherpa van the ratios are crap. Best one to go for is a late 2600 SD1 as the box wont have been hammered behind a v8. You want what is known as a "D suffix" 2wd LT77.

Take a look at ebay item number 180059617076

The fact that imput shaft doesnt wobble about is a very good sign. If you do need to rebuild it, rebuild kits are avaliable the include the oil pump for a shade over £100. If you want someone else to do it then its about £375 for a fully reconned exchange unit.

If you get a box out of a sherpa you will be very disapointed. the gear ratios are too high.
The D suffix boxes have a much stronger gear set and ratios more suited to a long distance cruiser like a P6

Plenty of LT77's on ebay, they just won't fit the T16, you need the bellhousing from the sherpa, or the 2ltr sd1 that's the problem, so you end up buying 2 to make one useable box. Plus they're asking too much for them now.

Think theres a place in blackpool that breaks SD1's might strike it lucky with a belhousing there?

I like the idea of the T Series Turbo conversion, are there any Toyota boxes suitable? Very strong and cheap to buy, they've been used for MG, TR and Lotus conversions in the past so adaption parts are available.
As to the standard T Series why bother? With a little porting, mild cam regrind, ITG filters, ram pipes, new needles, Magnetronic and few few less silencers, I,m getting better that 140 BHP out of my TC.

You've kind of made my point, "with a little porting, mild cam....etc", a standard M/T series is 140bhp stock, you get them for free and its all engine managed, no choke, better mpg, good for 150k miles easy etc. Once there is a simple gearbox / engine mount combination then it would be a cheap and reliable conversion. Although I would definately prefer the turbo lump !

I agree about the Toyota gearboxes, although these are now getting a bit thin on the ground, try searching ebay and you'll find very few RWD toyota boxes. I'd love one of the 6 speed supra jobs !

I'm sort of torn between just doing a one off conversion for myself (i.e. anything goes), or making sure all the parts are easy to get hold of to allow for a "kit" to be produced.

I've sourced a rwd inlet manifold (discovery mpi) which would then allow for a nice big front mount intercooler with minimal hose length, as opposed to using the standard fwd manifold which puts the throttle body at the back of the engine.

All suggestions gratefully received ! :)

Why not buy a modern car and repanel the body to look like a P6 instead? Then you'd get uprated suspension /brakes thrown in for free
If the Japs can make Nissan Micras look like Mk 2 Jags anything is possible !

There was an article in The Sun about a man who had restyled an Allegro ,
But he'd cut the roof off -wouldn't it fall apart ?
