Electronic Ignition

Hi fellow P6 Owners,

I apologise in advance if this question has been previously asked.

I am considering fitting my '73 2000 SC with electronic ignition, I have a few question to which some of you may know the answers:

1) Firstly, can fitting electronic ignition be carried out on a 2000 SC?.

2) I've heard of two companies, ie Aldon and Lumentition, which one should I go for?

3) What are the Pros & Cons with fitting these, and how difficult is it to do?

Any other info/things I should know would be grateful.

Thanks

Maurice :)

Hi Maurice

I am thinking about doing so as well.

From what I have learnt there are various systems on the market that either are fully electronic or enhance the performance.

I think the Aldon Automotive is slightly better if you want to retain an original look as the module sits inside the dizzy cap, whereas with luminetion you have an external module. Also, I think the Aldon is significantly cheaper.

Don't ask me the difference, but Practical Classics did an excellent article about 1 year ago.

Any other info from existing installations would be appreciated

Regards

Gary

Hi Maurice,

I have fitted the Aldon Ignitor system to my 3500S, opting for this instead of the Lumenition Magnetronic due to its lower price. Both these systems fit entirely inside the distributor cap keeping the engine appearance standard.

Fitting was very straight forwards, except for having to file down the threads on the Ignitor's locating pin in order for it to fit through the points locating hole. I even found the car started first time once fitted so I didn't have to worry about setting the static timing before setting the timing dynamically.

My car had previously been converted to 12V ignition (as opposed to the usual 8 or 6V), and anyone else contemplating using electronic ignition would have to do this first. This involves fitting a new 12V coil and bypassing the cars Ballast Resistor (usually easier just to splice a new 12V feed off another ignition-switched circuit)

I have to say though that since fitting I haven’t noticed any particular performance or fuel economy gain, but the car was kept in a fairly accurate state of tune prior to this anyway. In the long term I do look forwards to not regularly having to readjust.

The car has now also stopped eating coils and condensers, which is nice.

Hope this has been of help!

James Harris.
