Dual circuit brake light switch: Land Rover?

Hi all,

my brake light switch died two weeks ago while I attended a classic car rallye here in Austria. Now I noticed you can buy replacement switches in UK, but it seems they are only available in the in-line hydraulic form as for single-line systems. However, my 3500 is a Swiss export model with a dual circuit braking system, and this has a mechanical switch which operates directly on the brake pedal. It has a rather sophisticated mechanism involving some sort of cam on the pedal, a bracket carrying the switch, and a steel spring which pushes the switch to work the brake lights. I figured out how the mechanism works consulting my collection of BL manuals.

There is a switch you can readily buy which is supposed to fit Land Rovers, judging from pictures this looks completely identical to mine. Sellers e.g. on eBay claim they work either as brake or reversing light switches on LRs. As these switches are rather cheap I'm thinking about giving it a try and buying it to see whether it will fit. Has anybody encountered a similar problem in the past? If yes, could you please give advice?

Thanks and greetings from Vienna,
Klaus

Hi all,

thought this might be a rather exotic topic, no replies so far. Anyway, I found a cure. The brake light switch sold for Mk 2a/Mk 3 Land Rovers does fit, and very well indeed! I even managed to buy an old Lucas branded switch. The Lucas part number of the switch I bought was/is SMB420, 900 50/00. On the switch it says 39184 3200A LUCAS UK (btw., the old one had 39218 273B LUCAS UK stamped on). I just had to file the contact pins a little as they were too wide for my P6B's connectors. I'll install the new switch this weekend.

Cheers, Klaus
