drilling out timing bolt...

I'm going to have to get a few more hole saws. Are there differing qualities? The one i got was a silverline and cost a couple of quid, but i'll spend more if it makes this more likely to work...

I use Starratt, but they have to be used with an arbor, which should have a centre drill, but you should be able to use just the holesaw on the arbor. You'll just have to have a look to see if they do them that small, all the ones I have are larger (1"+) sizes.

They dont seem to list an arbor to partner the 8mm 5/16 version though. Confuddling!

Rich

I know I originally sowed the seed for the diamond holesaws in my original posting, but that was because with limited time available then I googled "5/16" holesaw" and that was what came up. Now I have more time, the diamond ones probably aren't the most useful for you, and the normal bi-metal ones would be better, but I've had another look and Starratt don't appear to do them as small as that.

Cool - i know what i'm looking for though, and we've sort've proved that this will do the job ( which is a relief :) )

Doesnt look like other hole saws go down as low as 8mm. So i think unless somebody thinks otherwise i'm best just getting a load of these silverline ones and just carrying on?

Well the Rotabroach cutter arrived. Unfortunately it bounces straight off because the cutting area is quite thick. Looks like I'm going to have to hold on for the other diamond grit saws to arrive.

The little b@stard is out.

So i'm guessing i need a helicoil kit. Can anybody help with what helicoil i need. After drilling with 5/16 / 8mm hole saws hopefully that tells me the hole size correctly, but i'll stick the callipers in tomorrow to check before i order anything.

Rich

well done rich, good work, some helicoil kits come with a tapping drill and that size drill, for a 5/16" helicoil tap, will be 0.332" which is a 'Q' size letter drill bit (8.433mm), which is 4 thou up from a normal 21/64" drill bit, so if you have a set of drill bits and the hole is under 21/64" you will be able to fit a 5/16" unc helicoil using the drill bit supplied with the helicoil kit or if no drill supplied you should be fine to drill it to 21/64" and go easy with the helicoil tap provided. use a light penetrene oil or wd40 similar when drilling and tapping into ally. now all you have to do is buy, borrow or hire? a 5/16" helicoil kit.

Well done getting it out at last, Rich.

I've got a 5/16"-18 UNC Helicoil kit in the garage, which you're welcome to use?
