Diesel inside the tank - what will happen?

This morning I decided to go to Job with my P6, being still sleeping I putted 3.5 litres ( less than 1 gallon ) of diesel fuel in the tank, then I filled the whole tank with 98 octane petrol.
what I might expect?

it will be smokey for one, not sure of long term effects though, diesel is a heavy oil so may sink to bottom of tank. If it was petrol in diesel it would be big problem as it destroys the injectors (I know this from personal experiance after someone else put petrol in diesel work van)

Thaks indeed.
I own two Rover, both green but the new one is a 75 cdi that I usually use as every day car, this morning I decided to use the old P6.
Do you hink is a good idea to move in advance the distributor injection cause now I have less octanes?.

I once did this with a Chevette, put a couple of gallons of diesel in, garage attendant suggested filling with petrol so I did. 40 Miles down the M62 it holed a piston !

I wouldn't do it again, I would drain the tank, preferably before starting the car !

I suppose it depends on the ratio of diesel to petrol and how hard you drive it
It was a Chevette after all .I saw one today ,can't be many survivors

Few years ago I was working at a Nissan dealer, we had a hire company up the road that hired out the same petrol vehicle to three different customers on three consecutive days and on three consecutive afternoons we had the car in draining diesel out.
Turns out the petrol station closest to the hire company had run out of red & black fuel pump handles and had put green ones on all the pumps. There was an artical in the local rag about it, about 100 or so cars had been wrongly filled up!
