De-dion seal question

Hi all,
I've just got my seal kit (oil seals, garter spring and strap) today for the de dion and I'm going to start the stripdown tonight, The memory has faded a little since I last had the de dion apart for a new gaiter but I do remember having the half shafts off and the elbows and I do remember thinking to myself that it was a bit overkill to remove so many bits to do a gaiter, my question is do you have to remove all of the halfshafts to get the centre tube off the car or is there enough slack if I remove the stabilising rods and undo the centre tube section on it's own?
Thanks,
Jon.
:)

Just remove the two rings of bolts at each end of the tube.

PS It helps to mark the tube to the elbows.

Nice one H! :D I did suspect that was the case, I've already got dot punches on the tube from the last strip for the gaiter fitment so alignment should be fine.
Cover me! I'm going in!

Interesting, grease instead of oil. What effect if any has that had on the car? How do the bushes get on with grease instead of oil?
I did ratchet strap the back end, the car is currently still stuck in the air as the gaiter gave up it's fight for life on the bench. Pain in the jacksie but it was pretty swollen up and the groove for the garter spring has never been any good from the day I fitted it so I shall purchase one tomorrow and that should be with me asap and I can get on with refitting it. Thanks for the replies.

Hello Jon,

Does your de dion tube have an oil plug? If not then you don't need nor use oil seals in the same way as the oil type tubes require. There are two specific kits, one for the oil type and one for the grease type.

Ron.

Hi Ron,
my tube is the oil type with the plug, I've fitted the seals but unfortunately the gaiter didn't survive the trip. I would've normally done the whole lot together but finances are a tad strained right now so gambled without a gaiter to my cost. Car is now on ramps with a gaiter winging it's way from Ian at Rover classics.
