Dakota Digital

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and buying the Dakota Digital electronic to manual speedo box - does anyone have any experience of these that they can share, please, good or bad? I'd be interested to know which variant I need to buy and what's required in terms of modified cables, etc.

I'm currently running an LT77 5 speed 'box and have acquired an electronic sender unit, so that's the pulse sorted, once I've figured out exactly how to wire it up, it's only got two wires, so I'm presuming it takes a 12v supply in and modifies it before putting it back out, then using the return via the box.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Baron?
I'm running a Dakota Digital box in my 1971 3500 with a ZF HP22 trans.
I've also just put one in a 1942 Chevvy pick up truck. (this was fit only, I didn't buy it)

The first thing to consider is the cost. i paid just under £200, but Import duty and charge added about another £48.
May be less now because of exchange rate.

The supplied cable won't fit so you need to get one made. using the supplied one for the box end. There is a button supplied to wire in for calibration, but the quality of this makes it fit for the bin.

I fitted mine under the drivers seat, wiring is easy ( mmm. but I am an auto electrician)

Calibration is generally a two man job, dangerous for one.

Once set up work fine.

Jim.

Thanks Jim - the cost is high, but I have further mods planned that will change the overall gearing of the car again, so the ability to recalibrate again easily will be a bonus. Wiring isn't a problem, I'm quite happy with that kind of thing.

eight - I hadn't considered that option - wouldn't that involve major modifications to the instrument cluster?

Not really, you can have your existing speedo converted to digital, it will look stock apart from the mileage tumbler will be an LCD window, all the rest will remain the same.

If you intend to carry out more mods as mentioned, then the Dakota kit is the one for you.
