Cracked manifold

Thanks Harvey,I was not to sure to get it welded or brazed .
While the carbs are off I will have a go at refurbishing them.
Should I do any other work in this area before I put it back together :?: It took me 4 hours to get the manifold off

Brazing is for cast manifolds. Check the engine sideplate while the manifold is off as it has to be removed to do them. Make sure when refitting that the front mounting on the exhaust doesn't load up the manifold otherwise it will just crack again.

I'm in middle of replacing my sideplates. I've just removed the carbs to find my manifold has cracked in the same place :(

Everything is available from here. What year is your car? It seems you need different kits depending on what year the car is.

I've spoken to the SU guys at a classic car show, and rebuilding is well within the scope of the home mechanic, except for replacing the spindle bearings. These need special tools, but you can send off your carb bodies to have the bearings replaced.

When I fitted the carbs to the manifold today they are not flexible as before but solid with no play at all what am I doing wrong :?:

Try loosening the two bolts on each carb with the thick shanks. They should only go in far enough so as to allow movement on the 'O' rings, which should be at the end of travel of the bolts but I've found you are able to nip them up too far.

Thanks, I have eased them off a bit,but they don't flex as they did before As you say you can only go so far as the bolts have shoulders on them.Been for a short drive and the car is more responsive as if a few more horses have been thrown in :D could it be the bolts were not tight enough before.Posted some photos, I got the manifold welded for £10 and he did a good job no more leaks. 8)

Are you sure that the carb adaptor plates that bear the O rings have been pressed fully into the manifold?
If they are, they become sort of locked in, even without the bolts, but you can move them up and down with some effort.
If they didn't they could show the symptoms that you describe.
