Correct fuel for 2200 TC 1975

Hi, all. Joined this great club as I'm shortly to take posession of my lifes dream, a 1975 2200 TC but I'm pretty confused over fuel. Practical Classics Magazine lists this model as suitable for use with unleaded petrol, "without mechanical modification or use of an approved additive". The current owner has told me he uses LRP and not to use unleaded, on the advice of the AA and his mechanic, but is LRP still readily available?. The cars done 84000 miles but has had new valves fitted. Most grateful for any advice.

P6loopy,
Well done for buying a superb motor vehicle, I'm sure you will have many happy motoring miles with this vehicle, especially if you attend some of the many shows around the country during the summer months.
If you have joined the P6 Rover Owners Club you will receive 6 magazines per year and much information on meetings / discounts etc. etc.
The best fuel to use depends on what you can buy in your area. Your car would have been designed for 4 star fuel when originally built and you can still buy that from certain garages (listed in the classic car magazines and newspapers) or you can use Super unleaded (or Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate plus an additive) I recommend Castrol Valvemaster Plus because it is one of the recommeded additives and it works for my car which was originally designed for use with five star petrol.
If you need further info' please contact me.
Regards, John.

Many thanks John, for such a quick and detailed reply. After considering my options, I think I shall probably continue to use lead replacement petrol as did the previous owner, while I assess the availability in my area, and the car's performance. Reassuring to know that there is an alternative though, should I encounter problems. Thanks again.

P6loopy,
LRP will disappear during the latter half of this year so be prepared for a change.
Suggest good quality unleaded plus an additive for long term use.
Regards, John.
p.s. If you send me your e-mail address I will send you a copy of my article on fuels which appeared in the P6 NEWS in April 2003. Re-prints of magazines may be obtained from the club treasurer for a nominal fee.

The 2200 engine is fine from a wear point of view with unleaded (as are other P6 engines, see other discussions on this). Check to see what octane rating the 2200 requires. If this is more than unleaded then just retard the ignition a little. Use additives or LRP if you like, but LRP will soon be no more and additives are a waste of money with this engine.

I have run my 2.2TC on standard unleaded without problems for the past 11 years, so I wouldn't worry too much.

I would try a tank of "Optimax" (make sure your very low on fuel to get the best benefit) I know a number of people who are finding this give very improved running and noticeably more power. And you can probably run without retarding the ignition. Must be worth a try......
