Cooling Problems - Running Cold

Does anyone have any ideas on why my V8S run's cold. Engine seems to take an age to get anywhere near warm, and then only just about gets to the green section of the guage. In cold weather I'm still on choke for about 15/20 miles before I can push choke fully in. Even when I have done this engine sometimes stalls when I stop. Heat through heater matrix is also just about luke warm, so this also confirms to me that engine is running cold and is not a guage problem. I have tried changing thermostat (82°C) but this has made no difference. Me being new to the V8, is there a bypass hose somewhere, with a one way valve that may be problem? Or should I replace thermostat with hotter unit? Car is also fitted with Kenlowe, this is definately not switching on when it shouldn't so is not the problem. Should I remove pump blade for winter running?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Regards

Mike

Mike,
I have never owned an "S" but several 3500 models and during very cold weather have always blocked part of my radiator grill with aliminium foil from the outside or a piece of hardboard on the inside.
Have always changed the thermostat when changing antifreeze (every two years) and flushed heater matrix at about the same frequency.
Does engine seem hot under the bonnet ? (But not in car or in radiator)

No engine seems fine, but when you touch hose from thermostat to radiator, this seems only warm, not 'normal hot'. I have a p6 radiator grille blanking screen somewhere, so I may try this.

Mike,
Here I am again.
It's not unknown for a new thermostat to be faulty - It has happened to me some years ago.
Heater not running hot could be explained by internal furring if in hard water district.
Suggest disconnect both heater hoses and drain / fill with hot water containing kettle descaling solution. Leave 10-15 minutes, drain, flush and reconnect / refill.
Makes hell of a difference to heater performance!

hi
my v8 landrover was like this, all i did was back flush the sysetem and stick some rad flush in it, refill with water and ran it for a week, then drained it again and refilled with antifreeze and water, had to keep opening the window after that :D the inside of the hoses and block tend to furr up, reducing the size of the waterways in the block and the internal diameter of the hoses, the holes in the head gasket are also easily blocked, a good clear out usually does the trick, hope this helps

regards

landroverbob

ps, i run without a thermostat now
