COOLING HOSES

just serviced the old tc and noticed that the small rubber hoses one on the top of the thermostat [small elbow]and the heater feeder pipe both have signs of cracking.as these are only a year old is this a common problem and if so is there an alternative to rubber.i read somewhere that kevlar hoses are available is this right
cheers steve

The max power boys use silicon hoses, you could try askinga suplier if they have any that will fit the rover, and I remember there was a suplier that would make them for you in any colour you wanted, I just can't remember who (sorry)

In the old days when I ran a 2000 (before I switched to V8's) My local discount parts shop sold heater hose by the metre with a "spring" insert to stop it kinking. I used to use that to the heater. Last time I bought some must have been 15 years ago though - But it was a dirt cheap long lasting solution.

The problem with rubber hoses (and even those re-inforced with Kevlar) - is that they do perish with age. You may have only had the hose on for a year - BUT how many years ago was it manufactured? and has it been stored in the dark?

Zebedee is right. That is what is called "rubber cure age". and that is the reason aircraft engines are rebuilt at specific age regardless of use.I have had to throw away boxes of unused "new" parts which have now hardened beyond use.
Unfortunately, this probably applies to the "new" Rover window seals I purchased years ago that are stored somewhere in my cellar.

We have a similar problem on 820's where there is a short hose about 2 inches from the exhaust manifold, eventually they fail and spray coolant all down the exhaust, makes a great cloud of steam !

The best solution is, as suggested, a silicone version, these don't perish, and you should be able to get one in black rather than the usuall boy-racer blues and reds.

Have a look at Samco Hoses

He may want Red or Blue :p and thats the lot I was thinking of, so your brain must be working better than mine.

:D I had a bit of a rant at my assistant at work, he loves the all blue hose max-power engine bay look, I just had to convince him he was wrong :D

If a load of Kevlar ones were done would be approx £5 each - As I dont have a 4cyl on the road not sure I'd want to commit to 10!

hmmm at £5 each I might get some, but then if I start to replace the hoses then I will feel I should sort out the oil leak, then if I do that I should clean the engine and if I do that I might have to repaint bits, but if I repaint bits I will need to take engine out, then If I have engine out I might as well rebuild it. Argggghhhhhhh curses  now look you have made me do, I have only just got the car back after finding out the cross member was cream crackered (Thanks Mark for bashing it about welding bits in and sorting it) car drives alot better now I can even hear the radio and no clunk when pulling away or stopping :D. and now you have me thinking about an engine rebuild
