Colour change?

Folks

For several months now, waiting patiently in the queue for attention, we've had a Tobacco Leaf 1972 2000 automatic. It's an August 1972 car, and was an abortive concours restoration about 20 years ago.

It's a two owner car, The base unit is stunning, and it's loaded up with new brakes (bought from Rover Main dealers at the time, with the receipts), new exhaust, and and engine that runs like a sewing machine. The (buckskin) leather interior is superb. It's got just over 60k on the clock from new, with a full history.

(This is the car in approx 1990)

We've kept this one back with the intention of doing a high quality paint job on the car using several new wings etc. that we have in stock, and then moving it on for a decent price.

Looking at the car today that time is approaching, possibly to get it to the NEC in November...only question is: what colour?

Bearing in mind we are replacing all wings and the bonnet, the potential is there to change the entire colour of the car.

To be absolutely correct it could either be:

Almond
Arctic White
Cameron Green
Corsica Blue
Lunar Grey
Mexico Brown
Monza Red
Or Tobacco Leaf....

We're erring towards changing the colour, with Monza and Cameron Green being favourite.

Another option would be to go for a P5 colour, Bordeaux Red being a particular favourite.

Whatever option, it needs to go with Buckskin

Any opinions??

Thanks
Nick

The paint on those panels pictured looks in pretty good nick. I'd keep it tobacco leaf if the finish is any good.

Alternatively, I'll hand you over my average tobacco leaf panels and give you some decent money for your doors if they're in good nick. I'm just about to get my wings and boot back from the coach works and no doubt they'll show up the rest of the car.

Failing all of the above, I'd go with Arden Green, perhaps with the Huntsman quarters?

All the panels have scratches - appears the result of being in a garage for an extended period. The whole car needs painting. The bonnet has a ding on the front edge, so we will replace that with a better one from stock.

The doors on this car are in excellent condition. Sadly for you though, they're staying on the car!

Arden Green would look beautiful - not technically correct for the age of the car, but it would look stunning...

I had a look at Ruigers site.

August 1972 - August 1973
almond................ bronze, buckskin, ebony
arctic white........... bronze, ebony, mango
cameron green....... bronze, buckskin, mango
corsica blue........... buckskin, ebony, mango
lunar grey.............. bronze, ebony, mango
mexico brown......... bronze, buckskin, mango
monza red............. bronze, buckskin, ebony
tobacco leaf........... bronze, buckskin, ebony

That rules out Lunar grey, arctic White. Tobacco leaf when in good conditon is lovely unlike the one I used to own which looked like a faded cardboard box.

If your going for originality then Tobacco leaf, I always felt that the colours listed were a bit duller than the Aug 73-75. Just compare Scarab blue to Corsica Blue and you will see what I mean.

If you want to do something different and correct then what about some of the CKD colours. If I ever got another brown p6 I would make it saffron.

I am slowly restoring my 2000SC Tobacco leaf car. It most certainly will not be ready any time soon but I would suggest sticking with Tobacco Leaf. My car had ' of the several shades of this colour and I have always thought of it as the 'ugly duckling ' of the range. But I have now changed my mind seeing an immaculate V8 in this shade at Cholmonley in the late summer show recently. In early summer I spotted a restored VW camper and finished in Tobacco Leaf- It was fantastic!. Several shades were produced over the years and it is important to find the correct one. Personally my preference is the later ones
My own car is now coming on an fresh paint makes all the difference

I love Tobacco (but then I am biased...!!!) so I'd say keep with that for originality... However, I'd love to see a Rover P6 in a metallic colour as I feel that would look tremendous and feel it's a shame you couldn't get a P6 in metallic colours originally... What colours could you get on a Jaguar or Daimler of the same vintage? Would any of those shades work with the interior that you're going to use...? Coral Pink perhaps (a Daimler Double Six Vanden Plas colour I believe)...?!?!?!

You could have a metallic silver if you were lucky enough to get hold of a Platinum coloured V.I.P. 8)

I'd vote for sticking with Tobacco leaf too. It looks great when in good nick, or new.

Probably be easiest to sell for good money in Monza Red ?
Pity it's a 2000 Auto which some would say was the least desirable model

Scarab Blue is my favourite blue, barring Wedgwood, and was one of my suggestions.

Lunar Grey, lovely though it is, isn't eye catching enough if we're going for a change of colour, and we've had a surfeit of white cars.

That Saffron is a beautiful shade - close to MG Bronze Yellow, a colour I really like.

Yes - if the car wasn't tax free, in this colour, I know it'd be the least desireable P6 - I have a standing joke with a friend who often gets offered cars - whenever a P6 comes up it's always got to be a Tobacco Leaf 1973 2000 auto, with warped black leather.

This car is in such nice order though, it's got to be done, and I'm sure someone will fall in love with it.

Good thinking Ash.

You can see the original colour on this car - Tobacco Leaf, when not faded to a matt cardboard colour, has greens and yellows in it, and is a very nice looking thing...we can keep it as it is, or spend a bit longer and change the whole colour.

Yes, it would be nice to see a metallic one....not on this car nescessarily though...

Yes, you are right. And bearing in mind this one will be done in two pack, it will look shiny.

Paint it any P6 colour you want .... if you are going to keep it, go for a nice colour!! My car is a 1974 colour but a 1972 car .. SO WHAT!! Who wants a brown car just because it was right fir the year.

Please bear in mind, when ordering the car, you could actually state the colour you wanted outside of the range.

Bright colours suit the car ... I do have to say, that the Saffron is nice. The blues are conservative, browns sh*t, white is a nothing colour, my money is with Avacado, Saffron or Orange. Brigade is a nice colour too, but 2k please as red does go off in celly.

If I do another one it will be bright again.

Just a thought but how about Midas Gold...? A lovely early SD1 colour...

Is that a gold or the metallic deep bronze?
Either way, they're lovely colours.

The car is coming into the workshop in the next few days, I've already started trial fitting new wings to it. Colour decision pending.

Cheers
Nick

Nick,My P6 is Admiralty?blue(P5 colour)with black leather.I like that colour.

I think my spares car is also Admiralty Blue - a gorgeous colour. Not original though as it's been sprayed over Corsica Blue. I'd do my project car the same colour except that it's dark enough to be very unforgiving of any less than perfect finishing work and I don't have that level of skill or patience.

id like this colour?

Looks wonderful on the model (which I had as a child). Rover didn't do a P6 in a red colour that deep (although there was a P4 colour close to it). Copperleaf is near, but lighter.
