Cold starting

My 2200 engined Auto with a single HIf6 carb has problem with maintaining the engine running when being started from cold. I splashed out during the winter with a new distributor and coil with electronic ignition and also the carb was sent to Southern carburetors for a total rebuild. The fuel mixture is spot on and the car runs great when hot ( the best since I have owned the car)the tick over around 750/ 800rpm. The only adjustment that seems to be done to the choke is run the engine until hot, pull the choke out until the head of the cold running screw is over the mark on the cam and set to 1500 rpm. But all things seem ok.

That's the fast idle adjustment, and it can be done with the engine cold. The temp of the engine has no bearing on the setting. Once it's set so that the mark on the cam is in line with the centre of the head of the bolt just as they touch, that's it, and if you don't get enough rpm then, the fault lies elswhere.

So what options, new leads and plugs (coreect champion)as I said brand new dizzy and redbuilt carb, runs fantastic with a good steady tick over when hot, no missfiring just a pig when cold. The only thing I would say while it is cold it sems to over choke with black exhaust smoke but this is clear after running a short while. the car never burns or uses oil from one service to the next.

That could just be because there isn't enough fast idle for it to run cleanly. Get someone to hold the throttle at the fast idle speed to see if that gets rid of it. If it does then you need to sort the fast idle so it's working properly. (Check the timing as a first stop). If it doesn't then it's running too rich on choke, which would indicate a problem with the choke barrel.
