Choke warning light

Hi all. I'm currently trying to get the choke warning light to operate on my 1975 2200 TC. It's never worked since I purchased the car. Looking in the manuals, I have one which illustrates a switch attached to the back of the cable pull, behind the speaker grille, which doesn't appear to be fitted on mine, and another manual shows an Otter switch as part of the thermostat housing, which I do have. Is the light supposed to show as soon as the choke is operated from cold, or does it come on when the car's up to temp but the choke has been left out ?. Also suggestions for testing said switch would be gratefully received. I know the panel bulb is ok as I've swopped it. Thanks.

Normally, the light comes on when the engine warms up & the choke is still out. On our V8 it sometimes comes on immediately though, which is the only time I've seen that on any of our Rovers, P4 & 5's included. Also on the V8 you have to turn the choke knob to the right after its pushed in to extinquish the light, which is also new to me.

If someone has changed the choke cable for a standard general cable in the past then you'll never get it to work.

There should be a switch on the back of the choke pull, I have this on mine but I'm not convinced its on the right cable. So it doesn't work.

On the P4 when the engine warms up the light comes on, push the cable in a bit and it goes out, engine gets a bit warmer and the light comes back on. - However unlike the P6 the P4 never needs any choke except in the depths of winter so I rarely see the light on

Our 110 doesn't need choke normally either though I've yet to use her in really cold weather so don't know if things will be the same then....
Our 2000's light doesn't work (good bulb) though it has the correct hook-pull on the cable & some sort of thing clamped to the back of the pull behind the speaker panel. I haven't done any serious investigating as I'm not sure how it all works.

in my 2000 the lamp comes on as the temp gauge needle moves into the green, and goes off then the choke cable is pushed home. Same in the V8. :p

Thanks for the info guys. I think I understand how it's supposed to work now, and I think the switch on the cable was removed to facilitate the fitting of speakers into the sides of the speaker housing. At 21 mpg I doubt if I will ever forget to push the choke in but I just like to see all the lights come on ! :)

I agree. I have tried ( over the years) to get my choke light to work - I have changed the cable (inner and outer) the switch and the casting (as described in P6 NEWS by our illustrious Malta member) and still my light does not work. I have bought a new cable and switch and can see how it's supposed to work but still cannot get it to work! It's the only thing on my car that doesn't work, so I'll live with it!
Regards, John.
