Choices for new auto gear box P6B

Progess in my quest today, found an auto trans company that makes acceptable noises (extremely acceptable) regarding pricing for them to recon rebuild and supply the appropriate parts needed to get the box mated up with all thats needed (possibly mechanical speedo drive too) I think I may have found a friend for life  so I am feeling a little more confident that I will get this project completed with much less stress than I had initially expected.

What componantry do I need to fit from the existing fly wheel to the RR torque convertor? Currently the p6B I have is a BW65 box, Do I use the existing flexplate? or do i need the flexplate that the RR Gearbox origionally had? what about spaces and adaptors from the motor to the 4HP22?
Glad to hear from anyone who has done the conversion before.

You will probably need a Rangie flexplate assembly. The converter is recessed into the bellhousing by about 4 inches so the Range Rovers have a regular flexplate, then a 3 inch aluminium spacer, then another plate that bolts to the converter. Shouldn't be too hard to find the whole thing.
The bellhousing will bolt up to the back or the motor without any trouble. The trans fits in the tunnel fine except for one of the trans mount brackets which will need to be cut away, then obviously, you will need to get creative with a mount and linkages.

Saw this site after being interested by the suggestion of changing the gearbox:

I dropped the owner a line and he replied with the following - thought you might find it some use:

Rich,

I haven’t produced any kits as such but have converted one of my Stags and, consequentially know what needs to be done in terms of Adaptor, Gearbox Mountings, Selector hardware etc. that would be common with the P6. The bits I haven’t thought about for your cars are Speedo (I’m going electronic in the Stags), Inhibitor & Reverse Light Switches (Micro switches off the selector lever), Propshaft (I had a new one made) and pipework for the cooler (easy stuff for a hydraulic shop).

I guess the way forward depends on how much work you guys want to do yourselves.

At the lowest level I could make a few adaptor plates and bolts and give you some instructions based on what I’ve done, £85-115 per set depending on how many want it.

I could supply a unit that I’ve stripped, inspected, replaced the suspect seals in and modified to suit the adaptor......about £200-£350 depending upon availability of suitable transmissions.

You’ll need to budget a further £180 or so for a new prop (or modify the existing one), £210 ish for an electronic speedo and the other bits to make it work and maybe £70 for inhibitor/reverse light parts and cooler pipework (assuming new).

All of the ZF units I’ve stripped have been excellent internally and the mods are an easy angle grinder and pistol drill job (although you do need a countersunk bit). However, you do need to get a mixture of parts from different ZF applications to do the job in the same way as I have.

Let me know what I can do for you.

I'd love to know why he needed to take an angle grinder to the ZF box ?, I was planning a straight swap.

Mine is a BMW box with a Land /Range Rover bell housing, torque converter, flexi plate and spacing boss. The gearbox length is virtually identical to the BW65 which is good.

I am also using micro switches from Maplins and relays for starter inhibitor and reversing lights and this is really the hard bit of the conversion fiddly to get all the movement line up with the gear selection.

Definately going to use a XJ6 XJ40 gear selector and cable replacing the Jag micro switches ( ECU signals ) for the Maplins ones. Space between the top of the gearbox tunnel and gear box is potentially an issue so may need to build a small platform on top of the gear box tunnel to mount the select slightly higher - hope this doesn't look to out of place if I need to go down that route.

I bought a digital speedo off ebay already fitted to a P6 pod.

There are lots of warnings on the internet about breaking the oil pump if you get the spacings wrong on the torque converter.

Received an email this morning - he details a kit for the 4HP22 gearbox...

thought it might be of interest :O)
