Hi all

Can anybody please advise me.

I have a valve that is ceased shut and has bent the Push Rod any tips or ideas on how to free it without taking off the Head.

The car has been standing for 15 years it does start and this is what has bent the Push Rod so am I correct in saying that the lifter is working fine.

Regards

Gary.

If the valve is seized then as it's bent the weakest link (the pushrod) then the lifter must be moving. Lucky for you the valve seized in the closed position not open, as that would have bent the valve and that would have meant the head would definitely had to come off. As it is all you could do is spray penetrating oil over the top of the guide and down the valve stem and give the stem a few light taps to see if it frees off, but make sure the piston is down. My gut feeling is that if it's that tight so as to bend the pushrod then the only way to do it with any certanty of no future problems is to remove the head.

Be careful when tapping on the top of the valve. If you tap on the spring retainer you may suddenly find
the collets coming loose and the whole lot disappearing into the dark recesses of your garage.
I'd be inclined to find a drift that would allow me to tap directly onto the valve stem.

Mix up some ATF and Lacquer thinners in about 50:50 ratio and that is an amazing penetrant oil.
Apply it liberally and over a few days to soak and if there is nothing actually mechanically bent or
damaged in the valve/stem/guide then you should be good to go.
