BW35 stopped shifting into third

Hi all,

My MY70 P6 with undefined milage but probably less than the age indicates stopped shifting into third today. It used to do 72 kmph/45 mph (GPS speedo) at 2000 rpm which corresponds to the nominal gearing (36 kmph @ 1000 rpm).

I noticed that the speed started to drop relative to the rpm and finally it stayed in second and did not want to uphift. My kick-down cable has not been checked or adjusted but the car has shifted gears correctly before. I have not tried the kick-down function in the short time I have had the car.

I suspected a low oil level because there is a minor leak from the transmission. Since I find it very difficult to determine the oil level from the dipstsick I added approx 0,3 litres without any effect. Trying to follw the procedure recommended by the Rover Club, I now suspect that it is overfilled.

Any ideas why it has developed this shifting problem will be appreciated.

Hi,

Yes, reverse works fine.

Drives exactly the same with the selector in “2” and “D” positions. Starts in 1st and goes into 2nd but not into 3rd.

I suspect its low on fluid especially as you mentioned you have a leak.
Level has probably dropped to a point where there is just not enough fluid to keep the clutch energised.
Top it up some more and give it another go

Hi harvey6,

It felt like it started in 1st when I selected “2” but could be my mistake

My point was that it stayed in 2nd regardless if in “2” or “D”.

It lost the ability to select 3rd while driving without me operating the lever. I.e. a problem with the linkage could not have occurred.

I also suspected low level and added fluid to well over top mark but It did not make any difference. But it is very difficult to read the dipstick.
