BW35 - Manually and Self Adjusting Inhibitor Switches

I've currently pulled out a manually adjusted inhibitor switch and was looking to replace it with a automatically adjusting inhibitor off a spare box, known to work.

I'm at a bit of a loss on how to set up the automatic style inhibitor, I assume there is some degree of fettling to get the inhibitor to a state where is can self adjust, however, is it simply a case of screwing it home firmly or is there more to it?

Thanks

Test it on the box it's fitted to, and if it's working as it should, then unscrew it from there and screw it straight into your box without altering anything. Do the changeover with the selector levers on both boxes in the same position. Hopefully it will work in its new home. If not you'll have to remove it again and follow the set-up procedure in the WM.

I've fitted it, as per the workshop manual and its starting in park and neutral just fine. The issue I'm having just now is that the reversing lights are also coming on in neutral.

It appears that they originally come on in reverse, however, passing through the gears and the back up to park then the reverse lights come back on in neutral. This wasn't a problem on the spare box, however, it was a problem with the the cutrent box in question, previously fitted with the older style inhibitor switch.

Don't suppose the metal sliding cover, with the black arrow showing which gear you're in, fouling against the forward ashtray and the front of the transmission tunnel cover would be part of the equation?

oh, on a 1970 v8.

If you think the linkage is playing a part in the problem, disconnect the droplink and operate the selector lever on the box manually, and see if that cures it.

What it actually seems to be (now that the car is driveable) is that the neutral position, I originally assumed, is actually Reverse, so the inhibitor is working fine.

What I now ask is... what needs adjusted correctly so that selecting Reverse, actually lines up with the Reverse 'R' position on the selector plate? The box seems to currently select all gears fine, however, when putting the car in Park, the lever almost moves too far forward and fouls against the front ash tray.

Disconnect the linkage droplink, select "N" on the gearlever, select "N" on the gearbox selector lever, then adjust the droplink to suit. You may have to do some fine tuning, and check how it selects "P" as well, before considering the job done.

Thank you Harvey, I appreciate your advice on this. I'll tackle this Thursday and let you know how I go.
