BW 65 versus BW 35?? - Autoboxes for the V8 engine

Peter,

The theory is that the type 65 is much better/smoother than the 35 although I have a 1968 Three Thousand Five which obviously has the type 35 fitted which is quiet and as smooth as silk on changes up or down.
It must all depend on the condition and adjustment of downshift cable.
I wouldn't argue with the theory but I am very grateful for the smooth operation of my type 35.
Regards, John.
p.s. I have a monster article in preparation for you concerning modifying Lledo models - Delayed due to breakdown of digital camera - Hopefully in time for December issue.

To be sure of a fair comparison would require two brand new gearboxes (or high quality rebuilds) and the same car to test them both. Then any play in the drivetrain or engine perculiarites would be the same on both tests. As John says his 35 is a smooth changer and I doubt any differences would be detectable except by a very discerning driver or highly technical equipment. Though logic dictates that as the 65 was a later development it should be 'better' though whether this is noticeable to the driver is debateable.

Well having bitten the bullet and fitted a BW65 to the Editorial series 1 V8 I have to report that the change is a lot smoother and my personal opinion ( for what that is worth ) is that the BW65 IS the better box.

Then again the 35 was a little worn and the 65 is rebuilt!!
