BW 65 not shifting properly and now whirring noise

After changing the radiator with a reconditioned one (this may, or may not be related), the gearbox didn't shift up properly.
I.e., the 1/2 shift didn't work when cold, it would stay in 1. But manually shifting into 2 engaged 2nd and the 2-3 shift was OK.
When warm, it shifted so, so, not like it did before the rad change.

- Downshift OK, no problem. Kickdown OK, no problem.

- Now it also started whirring.

- Fluid looks good, clear and pink.

Is it dead or is there still rescue?

Cold fluid is thicker than hot fluid, and blocked filters can be noisy, so I'd be inclined to suggest a filter change for the minimal costs involved.

Thank you.

One more question, please - how important is the flow direction through the cooler?
I'm not sure, but what if I swapped the pipes?

It won't make any difference. The chances are you won't have got them the wrong way around anyway. They come along the engine one above the other, and that's the way they fit to the cooler, and crossing those short flexible hoses to get them wrong would be very noticeable I would think.

OK, changed oil, cleaned the filter. The filter wasn't very dirty, let alone clogged.
The oil that came out looked like new, there was almost no debris in the sump or on the magnet.

The whirring noise is gone and the gearbox basically works again, but

1-2 shift is happening either very late, or has to be encouraged with lifting off. This late upshift means, that 2nd is only engaged for seconds until it proceeds shifting into 3rd.
2-3 shift is perfectly fine, and always was.
2-1 downshift (when coming to a halt) is happening very late, i.e. when the car is aready at walking speed, and slightly jerky.
Kickdown works fine.
Shifting under severe load (when accessing a motorway, or overtaking for example) works fine.

Note: The cable has been set more slack in the past to compensate for slightly jerky upshifts, but in essence this didn't change much. Generally the shifts are now a lot smoother since the oil was changed.

I'm not sure whether my descriptions are helpful, please feel free to ask if more info is required.

Cheers,

Christian

That is a tricky one, because there are so many things it could be, but in practice most of them never happen.

If it was cable adjustment it would affect the 2-3 shift in the same way as the 1-2, and it doesn't because after finally selecting SECOND it almost immediately drops into TOP.

Having to lift off the throttle to prompt the 1-2 upshift points to high pressures, as does the harsh 2-1 downshift, so if that is the case it doesn't seem as though it's the cable adjustment causing it, because the same thing isn't happening on the 2-3 shift.

I think initially I'd be inclined to check the front band adjustment, just so that you know that is correct before looking at anything else.

Once you know that is correct then you can start looking into it further.
