BW 35 Speedo Drive

Hi all,

Speedo cable snapped last sunday morning, investigated to find the right angle drive had undone itself and was hanging around on the end of the cable in the gearbox tunnel.

I remember having to sort this out on my previous P6 - I think my dad and I replaced the final bit of cable that runs into the gearbox, with a bit of steel from a file :)

Looking at the drive, it doesn't appear to be designed to come apart and there's remnants of the old cable in there - should it come to pieces? Any handy tips?

Cheers

These units can sometimes be repaired. Is it the cable extension which goes into the gearbox? If so you can solder a new one in potentially. However you can just replace the whole unit. You can buy a new one from BP Northwest.

Here is a link:

Speedograph richfield sell them also, in the UK. A bit more pricey however.

I would lubricate your speedo cable and make sure that it spins freely prior to putting things back together. Also make sure that your speedo is spinning freely. If the speedo or the cable are catching then all that will happen is you will break the drive again. Give them attention they need prior to final reassembly.

You can take apart the drive you have by taking out the discs at the opposite ends of the input and output shaft. Tap carefully with a punch. Peening is all that holds in the discs there.

I think you'll find those are different to the Rover ones.

What it interesting is I bought a second hand drive from a P6B (automatic) about 14 years ago to go on my Rover 2000 automatic and it fitted fine and worked briefly. The number on it was BG2401-05. I then learnt about greasing the speedo cable if you have trouble with the angle drive. I had the old drive repaired, greased the cable, and it lasted for 12 years.

I checked sometime ago with someone with a Smiths catalogue as to what drive goes on a Rover 2000 automatic, and it stated that it should be a BG2401-00.

Then 2 years ago I need to replaced the repaired drive this time, and I needed to do so quickly as NatRove in Adelaide was coming up very shortly. I checked the speedograph richfield application list and rang a place that sold Austin Healey parts in Melbourne. The parts manager owned Rovers and was going to be at NatRove the following week. So he checked that the part would work and I bought it from him and fitted it. So I can say that a Austin Healey 3000 angle drive will work.

Going back to the list of applications from British Parts Northwest, if I cross reference back to the list on Speedograph Richfield it lists some as using the BG2401-00 and others as being BG2401-05. I guess this begs the question is what is the difference between the two? My guess is the for a clockwise input of one, results in a clockwise output on one of the drives, and an anti clockwise output on the other. Then will that make any difference to the long term life of your speedo? To make things more confusing its list BG2401-04 as being for the Rover 3500 68-70, and has no listing for the Rover 2000 automatic.

Having said that I am probably going to buy a drive from British Parts Northwest, as the price is right and I am confident that it will fit, to keep a spare on hand before my next trip back to Australia.

They're both clockwise in/clockwise out, but on the Rovers the male and female ends are the same size and thread, on the Triumph ones the male end is smaller than the female, so the P6 cable fitting is way to big to fit the thread on the angle drive.
Only P6 autos have a lower angle drive, and they're all the same regardless of model.

Hi James,

Yes its the extension into the gearbox that snapped. I will see if I can tap it out and repair first before looking into a new one.

Will let you know how I go.

Thanks all.

Job done. With the help of Dad's workshop. We tapped out the discs and replaced the broken piece of cable.

Heater control leaver fell off in my hand on the way home - another little job :D
