BW 35 oil lek

I have just a general question as my car has a leak that has not yet been found. When topped up quite often a large amount of oil will appear after use and then other times its dry. I googled the question re oil leaks and it seems as if most of the issues that were talked about related to oil from the breather . So how common are leaks from the breather and what causes the issue.

Leaks from the breather are either because the box is overfilled, or because the breather length and routeing are incorrect. If you think the leak is coming from the end of the breather pipe, tape a plastic bottle to the end of it and see what it collects. Otherwise thoroughly clean the box and then roadtest.

Thanks for the prompt reply, I will ask the garage who has the car to check. Just one other thing there was talk about air locks that also cause the oil to leak out, is this possible

Air locks aren't possible as far as I can think, the only thing would be that if the breather tube were blocked for any reason (blocked with underseal at the end, or just badly kinked) then if the dipstick was a tight fit in the tube then it could cause leaks.

Re: BW 35 oil leak

I too have a leak. All of a sudden my auto leaked about 1/4 cup of oil??? I've been under it today and can't find anything obvious. I checked the breather and theleak is not from there. The box has recntly been rebuilt. The leak is on the left side and from my inspection I found the connectors of the inhibitor switch covered in fluid. There is no leaking from the thread where the switch enters the body.

Is it possible the the leak is through the body of the inhibitor switch?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

Craig

It's certainly possible, although I wouldn't say it was common. That said there are a lot of cheap (read: "rubbish") switches about so it wouldn't surprise me it's leaking if it's had one of those fitted. All I can suggest is thoroughly cleaning the switch and surrounding area, and the test to see where it's coming from.

Thanks for the reply. No leaking overnight or even any drips. I can't comment on the switch quality as the car is fairly new to me, but it is a later type without the lock nut.

I'll just have to keep an eye on it.

My box leaks but as new to rover and not even sure what type of box is in it ( 1974 series 2v8) it's dissapointing to find fluid on floor every day . Had a quick look .seems to be dripping from gearbox to bell housing but wet further up too. Inhibitor switch area wet but can't see this as being leak point. Am assuming front seal on gearbox is leaking..no idea where the. Breather is yet? Dipstick is not leaking though.

74 could be either, which side does the dipstick sit under the bonnet?

Once that's clear then it will give more idea of possible leaks.

So now we know it's a 65.

If it's coming from the bellhousing it's front pump seal or gasket. The box has to come out to do those.

The inhibitor switch is on the selector shaft, and there is a seal on that, plus a gasket on the servo housing the shaft comes through. Both can be done with the box in-situ. The breather is on the same side and above the switch, so that could be leaking from the fitting and running down. The pipe runs upwards, and then down towards the rear of the box.

dipstick is on right hand side when viewed from rad/front of engine.
car will likely be looked at next april by auto box expert ( takes to time to save ) so until then living with leak.

careful on your choice of 'auto expert'... the wrong one, no matter how well meaning is more hassle than it's worth.

Quite right -especially with the older specs .
Some expert "dude " I took my P6 to , was about to put the new synthetic oil in my BW35 , when I a lightened him to using the right mineral ATF . He didnt believe me until I made him google the BW35 . So called expert , yeah right !
I wouldn't have known had I not turned up early to pick her up and walked in on him about to refill her with what he thought was OK oil.
I had to go out to Super Cheap Auto store and buy the proper oil as he didnt have that grade in his workshop .
He went a bit grey when I asked him how many BW35's he had refilled with the wrong oil .
All said he was an expert dude on getting all selectors right and leaks sorted .
