Brakes squealing - very loud - SOLVED

Hello P6 friends....

finally, the brake problem is solved.

well, it was the missing SHIM kits on the front brake pads.

the workshop (range rover garage) forgot to re-install the shim kits 2 years ago.
also the second workshop (last year) forgot to tell me, that the shim kits are missing.
so, I bought shim kits and gave them the workshop 1 month ago - problem solved....

Its a little bit frustrating, that there is no ROVER P6 specialist in my hometown or in austria.....:-/

Re: Brakes squealing - very loud

This is non-Rover experience, but could be relevant, anyway. I was taught this as an Apprentice at a Mercedes Benz dealer in Cape Town.

Remove the pads and with a file, chamfer the edge of the pads where they contact the disc. A chamfer of 1mm should be fine.
Then, if you have anti-squeal shims, put a smear of Coppa-slip on the rear face of the pads where the shim goes and also on the rear face
of the shims. If you don't have the shims, then on the rear of the pads where they will face the piston. Also, run a smear of Coppa-slip on
the sides of the pads where they fit into the caliper body. Another smear on the retaining pins will be required when you refit the pads.

Prior to fitting the pads, you can use some emery cloth to break the glaze of the disc faces where the pads run.

Apparently the squeal is due to the pads gripping and letting go at a microscopic level as you brake and the frequency of the action, coupled
with the dry fitting of the pads sets up the squeal, sort of like a cricket chirping by rubbing it's wings together. The addition of Coppa-slip
reduces the tendency of squeal by adding lubrication to the mix.

Re: Brakes squealing - very loud

Hi, some pads come with semi hard backing or try getting stick on backing for the pads,
other wise as unstable load says copaslip.

Hi unstable load.
Thank you for advice, I will print this and give it to the mechanic. He should do this this way. As soon I have results I will report you.
I have a shim set, ready for installation.
Well, I drive mainly in the city, so its stop and go for breaks all the time. Maybe this is a reason too.
Many thanks to you.
Regards, Richard

I bought new pads – to be sure - :D I will check if they have semi hard backing and which brand.
Thank you

Re: Brakes squealing - very loud

Hi Richard, Yep the squealing can realy get on your nerves, I went through all this a year ago, (just the front brakes) all the chamfering and coppa slip etc but didn't make any difference so I thought perhaps the brake material was too hard, I then bought a new set of pads from "Wins International", these are original Girling brake pads (part number on the box is BD. 58 64326552) and "bingo" no more squealing, so I decided that the old pads were indeed too hard. Hope this helps.
Best Regards Dave
