Bought an SC motor...

Bought a motor today. I've been trying to get my hands on it for a while and it finally arrived. It's apparently a good runner but see if you can spot why I was interested in it... :D

Apart from a home made side plate and a crankcase breather/flame trap i am not familiar with, the block mounting brackets certainly look different from what i have used to see.
Has it been fitted as a conversion into something else other than a P6?

I'd love to think I could spot why you bought it but I'm not nearly familiar enough with the four cylinder engine to tell - other than the home made side plate.

What's that small black box for at the bottom of the block on the plugs side?

Is the reason you purchased this engine because this is one of the early ones that does not have the crank case breather system that potentially reduces power?

It's a crankcase breather, and it's actually mounted on the sump not the block.

Brilliant!

I have no idea what might be different about this engine. Looks a lot like mine :?

It's an early one with fabricated engine mounts rather than the later cast ones. Probably in first year of production?

It is indeed a very early motor, out of an early '65 car. It has the early breather system (sump mounted) and the (rocking horse poo) steel engine mounts. Nothing to do with the side plate, that will be replaced in due course. This is destined for the estate project.

I'm always amazed what does turn up in NZ. It seems that if there were only two surviving examples of something left in the world, one of them would be in NZ!
The car was a lovely willow green example (chassis# 40100264B) that I had seen for sale in the Christchurch area on several occasions over the years, each time looking slightly the worse for wear. Unfortunately the cost of retreiving a car from that far away always put me off and now it is in a scrap yard in Nelson. Apparently it was vandalised. But it does mean I was able to procure some bits so as well as the motor I got:

Nice 110mph speedo.

Central reverse light and bracket.
P3270137.jpg

Heater knobs.

Choke and reserve cables (slightly damaged)

and a pair of decent front seats in biscuit leather with the cable adjustment.
Also a near mint rear bumper is on its way. Is there anything else I should ask about from an early car? The small brake booster was already sold. I think the sharkstooth valance is a bit damaged and I don't know if it's worth trying to ship Dunlop brake parts around as I already have a set.

Hey Al

Had a suspicion you were sniffing around down in Nelson !!! I was quite keen on the bumper but had a beer and forgot to bid ! Did buy the steering wheel and a couple of other bits which I am very happy with . Put the wheel on my V8 just feels better to drive !! I know I keep threatening to visit and not turning up but will be in Aucks in the Range to drop off my Daughter and pick up some other stuff I scored on TM end of next week will give you a call love to see what you've been up to !!

Cheers Phil

Hi Phil, yes, I had been dealing with the seller off TM so he could send me some piccies and things. I wasn't going to bother with the bumper as he had listed it for someone else but as it had been relisted a couple of times, I thought why not?
Absolutely give us a bell when you're down this way and i'll put the kettle on. I haven't been up to much in the P6 field but we can certainly compare Rangies!
