Best carpet set supplier wanted

Hello fellow Rover drivers,

i am absolutely happy with my technically perfect P6, but i am fighting a nagging problem: The car smells bad inside. Its like the typical "old car smell" with a special odor of old english fart mixed with it :)
Seriously this is a problem because all your clothes would smell like that when you drive the car. The culprit seems to be the carpet, because of the thickness of the original material and the formerly installed aftermarket air condition, which made the carpets damp. The air condition is long gone and we tried many professional cleaning methods including ozoning the whole interior, but not with lasting effect.
I really would like to keep the original carpet set which is in good condition, but the smell prevents it.

Can somebody provide suppliers of specific P6 carpet sets? I want the best quality available, regardless of cost. I would really appreciate any help, because i love my P6 and my wife almost refuses to use it because of that smell.

Any other hints beside the carpets where the smell may come from? No dead animals or other organic material were found in thorough searches :)

I had this on an old XJ6 Jag back in the 80's.
Although mine was caused by a blown heater matrix soaking them in a strong water, antifreeze mix!
The way I did it was to remove the footwell carpets which were the main culprit,"seats out of the rover",and gave them to a well known local upholstery cleaner for a deep clean and thorough drying before putting them back.
I then bypassed the heater matrix and sold the car,as it was a swine of a job to do on them.

Apart from that,I got new carpets for my P6 made by Coverdale to the closest spec they had to original..

Thank you for the link, Pilkie. Looks good, but i am a bit puzzled regarding their colour options. They don't really match the original colour description (which is something like mortlake brown together with my buckskin leather i think).
A friend of mine recommended JR Wadhams for carpets (https://www.jrwadhams.co.uk/shop.asp?carID=P6).
Can anybody share any experiences with their carpet sets?

Thank you in advance and greetings from Germany

Hi Olaf,

I fitted new carpets and underlay from Coverdale and was very pleased with the quality, my only niggle was the drivers side sill piece which seemed a bit short. I couldn't get an exact match to original so I went for champagne.

Have a look at this link to my project page and you can see the new carpets fitted.

I am so pleased you asked this question Olaf!

I too have been contemplating this very issue, and had exactly the same thoughts regarding the Coverdale colours.
I will await with interest which supplier is thought to be the best for accuracy AND quality.

If you tell them the colour you have and what car, they will happily send you some samples, the closest match to original on mine was a Jaguar biscuit shade.
The type of material you choose can be cheap or expensive,I dont think the original material used on P6's is still available!
It wouldnt surprise me if some of the bespoke P6 suppliers get theirs made by Coverdale or suchlike, and then whack on a few quid profit!

A little update on my quest to clean the carpets and make them smell better vs. new carpet set:
Since a new carpet set is one option (already discussed here), i would still try everything to keep the original ones (a lot of my mates tried to convince me of that).
Aside from ozoning the whole car i removed the main floor and boot carpet pieces and brought them to a professional carpet cleaner. They will clean them by hand and i am looking forward to the results.

When removing the carpets, i removed the underfelt mats also. They look and smell sorry and there is no real way to clean them. I understand that they were used for sound deadening, but are they really necessary, especially in the trunk? These things are incedible damp catchers and keepers and therefore more of a danger than a blessing. Is there any reason to replace them? On the passenger side i removed the underfelt a long time ago and noticed no change in cabin noise whatsoever, the Rover is just a very silent classic car.

Greetings from germany

I bought a Coverdale carpet set with the soundproofing material sewn into the floor mats, and a set of carpet overmats. I am very pleased with the carpets except for the fact theat the two carpet pieces covering the tunnel had no binding at the rear edge. The tunnel carpet is in two pieces and the front overlaps the rear just at the back of the rear seats. I ended up folding the carpet over at this edge which gives an accetable look, but proper edge binding would have been better.

Also getting the folds of the sill carpet in the front door apterture corner is not easy as the new carpet is much thicher than the original. It can be done with patience though.

Hello,

just a quick and final update regarding the carpets:
Geronimo - i was able to save and keep the original carpet set. A big thank you goes to my local carpet cleaner. They managed to clean and dry the old carpets without destroying the really sensitive underfelting.
When i picked them up their comment was: The fluid they washed them in looked more like an oil change afterwards than like carpet cleaning leftovers

But anyway: The bad smell is gone (which particularly sits in the additional and separate underfelting mats) and the carpet ist perfectly clean now. I paid something like 50 Euros for the cleaning procedure, which is definitely worth it when you can keep the original carpet.

Thank you for all your help and comments - case closed on my side....

Excellent news. I always prefer original carpets although some of the new, some differently coloured, carpet sets that forumers have installed really do look very nice indeed.
