Ok finally
The mean green hornet is alive again!
A combination of stale fuel from the reserve (brown it turns out), and trouble with the lucas distributor turned out to be the main culprits.
Installing the mallory, changing the dashpot oil, more fresh fuel in the tank, and some easy start in the air filters has done the trick.
I have a slight misfire at idle but am about to change the plugs and the frankly terrible leads, so they can be upto par with the new mallory.
With any luck that'll improve it.
Going back to the original post, the battery now seems fine
Thanks everyone for their help and advice.
Now to MOT, wish me luck
Jim
That's good to hear. When replacing the ignition leads be sure to buy (made in Aus) Magnecor leads. These are streets ahead of anything else available and make a real difference to the Rover V8. They eliminate cross firing and hence high speed misfire. They improve starting too - more of the spark reaches the spark plugs!
