Low wing airplanes are set up in the same way. They have a fuel pressure gauge. You turn on the electric fuel pump prior to cranking, and allow the pressure to build up to about 5 psi. Then turn off, and then start on the mechanical fuel pump. That way you know both are functional prior to leaving the ground. You run both pumps for take off and landing. Mechanical pump only for taxi and cruise. In a plane the electric pump is known as a boost pump, although it does not boost performance, except when the mechanical pump fails. If the mechanical pump fails in cruise, then it is known to boost the pilots blood pressure!
