Auto/Manual swap

Hello all.
As the auto box on my 3500 is a bit chunky in the gear change I'm considering changing to a manual 5-speed box. As I know this is a common modification there must be some documentation on this issue. so far I haven’t found anything! I would appreciate if someone could help me out and give me a clue were to look. As I live in Sweden I’m not a member of this fine club, maybe you have covered this conversion in you magazine.

Best regard’s

Come on guys, surely someone in the u.k. who has already carried out his mod could give some advice to our Swedish friends.
Not me, I only buy / use / drive / have owned / autos.
Regards & best wishes from South Wales, John.

I bought my 3500S with the conversion already professionally done so I have no detailed knowledge of what is entailed. The main thing I have noticed is that a section of the transmission tunnel has been cut away presumably for clearance, and an aluminium panel has been fitted over the hole. The rear gearbox mounting appears to bolt to this panel.
If anyone considering doing this conversion wants to look at my car they are more than welcome. I live in NE Lincs. I would heartily recommend doing it as the car is much more relaxed than standard box cars I have driven.
I was told the speedometer now reads about 20% under so I either need some sort of gearbox on the speedo drive or a recalibrated speedo. Does anyone have any ideas on this?

I think your biggest problem is as has already been said. The tunnel for the auto-box was huge compared to a manual. It's a case of wether there is enough room to get in the clutch pedal box and pedal and once its in wether you can operate it!
Don't know of anyone thats done the mod but i suspect you'll have to have a double jointed foot to make it work. :(

Nigel in New Zealand has an article about this on his homepage :

I also remember technical articles about this in the earliest P6 news I can remember, probably from 1989 or 1990. Maybe the editor could do us a favor and reprint those?
I also have project car 3500s, which is already converted. But I think the conversion needs tidying a bit. They had used a sledge hammer or something similar to make more space around the gearbox. Good luck.
regards, Oystein
