Another starter motor problem

I have recently re-connected my starter motor after a long time with it not being connected (it was initially taken off when the car failed to turn over 2 years ago). Wired up as in the Haynes manual wiring diagram, connected the battery and the starter motor instantly turns, making a whirring noise but not engaging with the engine, the whirring just gets faster. Of course I then just remove the battery.
Does this sound like the solenoid is stuck somehow but not engaging with the engine, has anyone ever come across anything like this?
The car is a 74 2200SC with what looks like the pre-engaged starter.

cheers

Sounds more like the inertia type starter, which tends to act like this when it has not been used in a long time and rusts at the drive end.

If the motor turns but it doesn't engage the ringear and turn the engine, either it's not wired up correctly or something is faulty within the motor itself. I would recheck the connections are correct and if they are, remove the starter and test it on the bench. Either way the motor shouldn't be operating the moment you connect the battery.

Thanks for the advice. I will take it out and have a good look. I read that it should be the inertia type starter but looking at it and comparing it to the picture in the Haynes (I know) I presumed it was pre-engaged.

Thanks again

Fairly easy to spot the diference, pre-engaged has a big "lump" (the solenoid) on the side, inertia is just a motor.

Hi Spoke , have you checked your engine earth strap?, ??? when you say the "starter turns instantly", do you mean when you turn the key,or as soon as you connect the battery up?

Hi hermione,
It runs as soon as I connect the battery up, no keys turned.

Hi spoke

there are 2 points or nuts on the starters solenoid that look the same ??? if you connect the battery power wire to the wrong one, it will just whizz over when you connect the battery!!
you need to connect it to the one furthest from the main body."top one in the ebay photo" If you have connected to the right one,and you do not connect the small wires, and it whizzes over, your solenoid switching mechanism on the starter has a short in it,,,,but,,,, if it only does it when the small wires are connected, you either have a faulty ignition switch,or a direct power feed into the solenoid switching mechanism from somewhere in the loom!!
Example; see this ebay item for a pic, ref;280121464981 ,,the upper nut on the top of the solenoid is the one to connect to.

Cheers Pilkie 0, the main battery feed is on the correct part of the solenoid so it must be one of the other things you have mentioned. Time permitting I will get around to taking the wires off one by one so I can eliminate the ignition switch etc and then if it still does it remove the motor and have it apart to see if I can see what is happening.
thanks
